Locked or Not

    Nobody makes a "locker" for the D27. They did make a Powr Lok, which is a limited slip differential, but to my knowledge it was never available from the factory in a CJ.

    Powr Lok is a pretty decent unit. I have one in the front of mine. You can take it apart and make sure the discs are good. Randy's R&P sells replacement parts.

    Ok Thanks. So basically the front end is not open but equipped with a limited slip. Whats the difference between locked and limited slip?

    X2 on the Powr Lok, but I'd be a bit concerned about how that case got hot enough to produce those heat marks around the cross-shaft.

    Its clearly from the factory. the unit looks good inside. i cant go wrong considering i paid only 250 for the front end with disc brakes and now a power lok. im pretty pleased. thanks for the help. you all are a wealth of knowledge.

    Locked is locking the axles on both sides of the Diff together and they turn at the same rate. Limited slip has a ratched mechinism inside that will allow the axles to ratchet in a turn.

    I always wipe out the diff as much as possible with a rag and then use brake cleaner. When I picked up my Powr Lok I took it to a mechanic friend who took it apart and cleaned in a solvent tank. I was told to put it back together the same way it came apart....keep the discs in order.

    Those burn marks are from being induction heat treated (hardened) in the area of the cross shaft. Nothing to worry about!

    got me to wondering whats in my D27 now, if it werent so dang cold,and it sitting in a foot of snow i would be out there now to see:rofl: any easy way to tell if it is a open diff or not, without a whole lot of work? or just pull the cover and look. it is not in a jeep, its on stand by, but will be going in my jeep

    Lock the hubs. Turn one wheel. If the other turns the same way then something is in there other than an open diff most likely. Another hint is to pull the fill plug. If you can see the diff case with bolt heads and a machined right angle, then most likely a powerlock. Ssssshhhhh. Don't tell anyone I said that....:)
