Exhaust Question

I have searched and am about “exhausted” reading all the info with still no real answer to my question..
I am working on a CJ5 Build..
Using a 62 Frame..
It is all set up to accept a Buick V6 and I was wondering where I am going to be when it comes to exhaust..

Is anything about this going to be easy?
Can I get some pointers or direction from people who have done/doing this..

What are you starting with? Dauntless manifolds? Buick car manifolds? headers? or nothing yet?

Do you want stock? If you want outside the frame check Advance adapters, or inside the frame check Novak-adapters. Also what type of steering are you planing. I have a 69 cj5 with 225, and i'm using Advance outside frame headers.

 

As of right now I have the ross steering and dont plan on changing..
I am looking at a motor from a CJ so it would have stock Jeep manifolds.. but I am not against switching to whatever I need to make it work well...

At this point I blew the budget.. so $$$ is not a major factor... ease of install and speed are first priority

 

also another issue I guess ties into the steering is the brakes..
I will be using the frame mounted MC if that dictates anything as well..

Any pics of the outside dump?

 

With keeping Ross steering, your best bet might be headers from advance adapters, outside the frame. I dumped my Ross steering and am changing to Herms ford steering. I have lots of room. I have 2" body lift and 2" spring lift on my 69 cj.

 

Outside frame headers will stay away from MC too.

also what are your impressions..?

am I mistaken that the CJ5 in 66 did come with the V6 ross box and frame mounted MC?
how did the exhaust run then? Is it possible to replicate.. all the suggestions I have seen online or in the forums have been retrofits or whatnot.. what about stock?

 

Stock the driver side manifold was actually a passenger manifold turned around so the driver's manifold dumped out the front. The pipe then looped under to clear everything. Passenger manifold dumped out the back like most vehicles.

 

If you are keeping the Ross steering and use manifolds you will need a front dump on the driver's side. Here's pics of mine before I changed to Saginaw steering.






The X-over pipe is above the skid plate and front driveshaft, the Y is on the driver's side, Flowmaster Extreme muffler, and it exits at the driver's rear corner. Everything is w/in the frame rails.:v6:

There was an old post on another thread w/a pic of the oem exhaust route however the image had been deleted does anyone have this? I think it was from the FSM

Yes and no. When I went to saginaw steering all that was required was a cut nearer to the Y and a piece welded in from the new rear dump manifold.:v6:

 

i think I scored an original one from 66...
Im going to take it to a shop and have a few produced..

 

I haven't got pics yet of my rig in computer yet. But with outside of frame headers, you will have about 91/2 to 10" of clearence between the outside of the frame rail and the closest part of the header. One other thing I did was to put in a set of drop down pedals.

 

has anyone with outside of frame rail headers ran their exhaust all the way out the back?
