225 carb rebuild?

Ok how hard is this really? Looks like I can order the kit from Napa for about 20.00. I've never done anything like this before.

The reason Im thinking of rebuilding my Carb on my 71 cj5 is that it hesitates on the initial acceleration. Only from idiol, and other than that its smooth the rest of the way. Someone thought it might be the accelerator pump. I tried bending the rod a little to see if this did anything. It said somthing in my Haynes repair manual about adjusting it by bent the rod a little. Was not sure weather to bend it more or not to see if there was an improvment, so I bent it a little and it didnt seem to make a diffrence. Any ideas?:flag:

They are simple. It does sound like it could be the acc. pump.

piece of cake. i spent more time removing and reinstalling my carb than i did actually rebuilding it.

if you have any mechanical inclination, you'll find it easy.

One suggestion is to do it in a deep pan of some sort as to not lose any pieces. Carefully take it a part and take note of how all the pieces went together. Some of the kits are one size fits many carbs so be careful to match up the replacement parts.

Yep, watch the gaskets. I usually rebuild carbs on a nice clean bench (the top of my tool box) with a couple clean shop towels laid down. The 2G is easy; hardly any parts.

I would order a float, too. I prefer the brass ones.

    nickmil In mothballs.

I agree with all said. Also watch out for the check balls that like to stick then fall out and get lost. Check the accelerator pump ball for sticking. It should move freely.

The alcohol in the fuel we have to burn now eats the accelerator pumps.

A lot of people at my club at the lake have had problems with their boat motors due to Alcohol laced fuels ... most everyone swears by the Marine Stabil (blue). I've started running it in my Jeep as well as in my I/O.

Used that Napa rebuild kit and new float, works good !!! Gave the carb a bath in MR Gasket Carb cleaner ( its like a heavy duty paint stripper) cleaned it like new. Gots lots of info from the Internet on rebuilding, took my time putting it back together,... running good for 2 yrs so far.
    Thanks alot to this site.
