!st would like to say hi

Just bought a 65 Cj5 good condition fiberglass body
original hurricane 4 in with 90,000 miles, and a warner all range over drive.
motor needs some work floods easy, and a lot of leaking around the warner tranny.

Now my question is I know the hubs were unlocked and the guy I bought it from said the longer 4 wheel drive stick in the pic its the 2nd from the right should be down to be out, but was noticing on stickers you can buy for shift pattern has it up as out.

the reason I asked if I drove it in for 80 miles would that of been some of the reason for the leaking from and around the tranny

or does it not matter since the hubs were unlocked

hopefully I did not ramble on to much and you understand what info I need

I wouldn't think that's the cause of the leak.....others with more experience will chime in hopefully

do you know exactly where it is leaking, and it is gear oil rather than engine if you were traveling at a decent speed with an engine leak it will gather on the cross members and drip from almost everywhere.
the fact that the front drive was engaged would not normally cause it too leak, without hubs the drive-shaft would rotate at all times anyway as long as one hub was disengaged the chances of causing damage are slight

the trans can only leak a few places, between shifter cover and case, the fill or drain plugs, and between trans and t-case, the input shaft would likely drip into the bell housing

make sure your vent system is clear, no vent= pressure = leaks = bad

if you have the T90/86 tranny, they can and do leak from the freeze plugs on the tower. the reason is the oil gets flung up there during driving and can't get out easily, the oil then pushes the plug out like pumping up a jack.

well it looks like its leaking more towards the front but does look like it is also leaking in the back where the 2 drive shafts hook into, just hard to tell because of the oil spray, but did pool up on the skid plate and thats where it all spilled out from when I put it in the garage after picking it up.

it must of leaked all out during the trip home and in the garage
started it up this am to move it over so wife could get her car in the garage.
and put it in gear let the clutch out and nothing just sat there idling in any gear.
and it did shift very smooth when I picked it up and the overdrive was nice.

not to mechanically incline here but have a couple friends that are
so I will have them look and maybe teach me a few things.

But after all I bought this to keep and have fun with so no hurry to get it on the road in 2 weeks.

little update not for sure what every part is called
thinking its the transfer case where the front and back drive shaft attaches to
were the skid plate has the hole in the middle where you have a pin attach to the bottom of the case
that also has a spring holding it in place, that pin is out sitting on top of the skid plate
just would like to know what that pin does.

The T-90 transmission has shared oil passage with the Dana/spicer-18 transfer case which has the vent. It will be on top and on the pass side. Nice jeep..

    Thanks
trying to find out were the leak is and if the seal I replaced is leaking again
now when I open the inspection plate on top of the bell housing and stick
my hand down pass the clutch and pressure plate its dry, would that not have gear oil in it if the front seal was leaking, or am I way off base

alright trying to pin point the oil leak in the tranny
thought it might be the front seal again but replaced it a week ago had a friend of a friend do it
and still leaking, but it seemed that it was coming from the top, so I thought maybe the top and gasket was not sealed.

so to take it off with out dropping the tranny had to trim a little bit of the fiberglass to get to the bolts, and after doing that I had a nice powdery
film on the top almost like I coated it with flour so decide would be a good time to take it for a ride to see really where it was coming out of, before I removed the top

so I get it about a mile from my home and do have the floor cover off, so I am looking down and see it leaking thinking the top was not seal, but it seemed to be coming out of one of the 2 humps that you have on the front and back of the tranny cover,

So I get it home and can't get my head under the dash enough to see but put my finger up front and feel that there is no plug or seal on one of the two humps up front (don't really know what they are called or the purpose)
but the 2 in the back and the other one in the front does have a cover or plug on it.

But the one that does not can stick my finger about a inch before I hit something.

sorry this is long but could that be my leak and would I need to get a new
cover if that is where the leak is from

I has kinda that issue a while back and it ended up being the top cover was leaking. would only do it after i had been running it a while. I thought it was going to be the front gasket on the tranny but then i took out the floor pan. I could see it was the top cover.

There should be a little steel cup in the end of the shift rail bore.
    Measures about 0.688" by 0.25".
I'm not sure if you can get it in without removing the tranny cover.
I would use some sort of hardening gasket sealer after a proper cleaning.
I've read that some people have drilled a small hole out at the ends of the shift rail bores, inboard of the cups, from the underside of the tranny cover so oil that collects inside the bores can drain back into the case.
I hope this makes sense and good luck.

    Thanks everyone
Just ordered a new top, could not see anywhere to buy the plugs
and not comfortable attaching a plate to the end, and just want the leak to stop, don't mind a little leaking but that top was really putting out the fluid
on the floor and could smell it burning when out enjoying it.
