Stupid Jeep Tricks

I just got home from work and took a peak under my jeep and I do have those reinforcement bars YEAH! So I guess I'll just pound the crossmember straight and go look for a pintle hook or if someone knows a source for a drawbar that would be great!

 

I feel your pain! A short time after I bought my new CJ5-A in 1966 a bunch of us went out into the woods. We were looking for a path to the camp we had laid out, and there was only one thing in my way, a very small tree. Just as I smacked it, intending to just knock it over, someone called out that they found a clear path.

When we got to camp I happened to look at the front of my Jeep and the fancy chrome front bumper had a large "V" in it. I didn't even realize what happened at first, then I was really annoyed.

When I got home I went off to the Jeep dealer and was able to trade off all the worthless (to me) Tuxedo goodies (pads, bumpers, and I'm not sure what else) for a roll bar and a draw bar. I replaced the bent front bumper with a piece of channel iron. It's worked good ever since!

I have the stock drawbar you are looking for, but I'm in colorado.

 

The front bumper works better for that kinda stuff Square tubing is nice

 

Now we're talkin'. I have a similar pc of channel like jeep2003 shows in the picture. To the rear of that I have a pc of square tubing that I store the handle of the handyman jack inside of.

Works very well & the receiver hitch comes in handy for towing or even just moving trailers around. You can also put the big shackle in the receiver hitch for pulling on. On mine I made another cross member to attach the other end of the hitch to so it's good and sturdy - the disadvantage of that is it takes up space where the spare gas tank would go.

I wouldn't fool around trying to install a factory cross member. Why go stock when you can do something much better?

 

forgot to mention i also triangulated the bumper pretty important if your yanking around on trees and stuff

 

This is why I shy away from anyone using a chain. You can pick up (worn) 10-16' long crane straps cheaper then most thick and heavy chains anyway.

 

Heh, heh, heh, you'd probably cry if you knew what that stuff is worth nowadays to someone restoring a Tux.....

 

I have one you can have. I know I have one from my '64, and I think I have one from a early '70's. I tried to sell them, but as stated before they are heavy and shipping usually is too expensive to make the deal worth it. I'll look today but I might even have a rear cross member you can have. I'm up in Cheboygan.

 

When I read the title of this thread, I was thinking "lay down" or "roll over" I have actually augered in my D4 trying to just yank out old thorns. If you push them over with the blade and then yank they come out easy.

Personally, I do not like the reinforcement plates as water collects between them and the rear cross member and rusts them both out. Better to build a new one.

This one is 1/4 wall, 2x3 tube, with 1/4 plate extensions running forward on top, bottom, and outside of frame that bolt through to another taped block inserted into the frame rails. The plates visible below the body are the rear roll bar mounts, which are also attached to the cross member.
