I just bought a 47 Willys CJ and it has a Buick 231, odd fire engine with a Muncie M21 adapted to a T18. My question is.... Why would you use a Muncie? I thought that the Muncies were used in race cars? Because they are high geared. Has anyone ran into this before?

I parted this Jeep out because it was in bad shape and I was not sure if the engine ran. If you would like to look at this set up. Click the link

when I bought my jeep it had a car Muncie 4 spd in it . it shifted just like my olds ,and was very high geared, it sucked for anykind of crawl ratio, the pocket bearing took a dump and froze 40miles away from my house in 4th. that was a fun trip home. I pulled it for a T-18 instead ,,,,,, and used the muncie spare parts for my car.

Don't confuse a D18 transfer case with a T18 transmission. What you have is definitely a car Muncie M-21 mated to a Dana 18 transfer case, and yes the crawl ratio will suffer offroad with this setup. Dana transfer case models are all referred to as a D-something while transmissions are referred to as a T-something. (general rule of thumb)

Back in the day the Muncie swaps were common in Jeeps for some reason, but never with serious off-roaders. I'm betting that an SM-420 would prolly drop right in there though since you're already set up for a Muncie...

    You mean like this:

It was a fairly common swap years ago, mostly for racing. I have seen them in sand and ice race riggs.

High HP - Lots of wheel spin - keep the momentum running.

Good for the dunes. That's a form of serious offroading. :driving:

AA offered many different kits back in the old days for us to upgrade the non syncroed T90 trans to a more modern trans. I used one of their kits to install a Mustang 10 bolt top loader behind a 302 into a Willys wagon for sand drags and general driving around town. It was before the phrase " crawl ratio" was using in the jeep world. I raced alot of flatties with muncies and 350s on the sand.

Absolutely correct. I had a BW super T-10 in the race Jeep for this reason.
    Nice Saginaw there Warloch.

I am very sure you will like a Muncie 420 behind your 231. have a similar set up in my cj6: a 225 engine with BOP bellhousing going to a Muncie 420 followed by an Advanced Adapter adapter into a Dana 18 with an overdrive on that... fun around town car and does great in the rocks with the 7:1 ratio first gear
