Back in January I asked some general questions on rebuilding my T14. I ordered all the rebuild parts and pulled it apart. Once it was apart i discovered that the low gear had welded itself to the mainshaft from running without oil. I was able to beat it off, but both gear & mainshaft were ruined. I bought a NOS mainshaft and gear. But by the time I received them, and found the time to work on it, my memory was stale. I took lots of pics during disassembly and had some directions from a '72 FSM (my CJ is a '69). Now I am stuck at the point of installing the bearing on the mainshaft in the rear of the trans. I have the bearing, adapter (ring shaped piece that goes over bearing), snap ring, transfer case gear, nut and washer. But the directions show a "bearing spacer", which I do not have. I am very organized and have all my old and new parts separated into pans. I don't throw anything out. But there is no spacer. I can't find a part # for the spacer. Can anyone shed any light on whether all T14's use the spacer? Where to get it? What it looks like? Where it goes (outside trans between bearing and transfer case gear?)(between the bearing and the reverse gear?)? Any info or suggestions would be much appreciated. Maybe I could make a spacer? Also, am I correct assuming that the snap ring side of the bearing goes on the outside of the trans?

The last time I had one of these apart was 30 years ago, so take what I say with a grain of salt...

There is a spacer shown in the parts book, Jeep PN 991079. From the outside in, it goes nut 940970, washer A1410 and the spacer. The snap ring groove goes so that the thin side of the bearing is showing - ie, the bearing goes into the case so that most of it is covered.

I have attached a picture of the trans with the bearing, etc. installed. I figured out the bearing orientation, but am not sure if I need a spacer. In the picture you can see that there is only about ΒΌ" of thread showing beyond the nut. That would only allow for a spacer about 1/8" to 3/16" long. The trans side of the transfer case gear has some teeth on it but I can't figure out what they could be for. They are coarse teeth, like on the brass synchronizer rings, not like teeth on a drive gear. Unless this gear fits multiple transmissions or transfer cases. The only issue I have remaining is if I need a spacer. I am considering putting the transfer case on the trans and looking to see how the gear on the mainshaft meshes with the gear in the transfer case. The only thing I can figure that a spacer would do is space the gear out from the back of the trans so that the teeth are fully engaged with the transfer case gear teeth. I suspect I could use some washers for a spacer, provided that the bore was the correct size so that they were centered on the shaft.

There is a spacer that goes between the rear output bearing of the transmission and the transfer case input gear which you are missing. Contact Novak, Hermtheoverdriveguy, R&P, etc. for the correct spacer. You have the transfer case input gear on backwards in that picture. The coarse teeth that are currently facing the transmission needs to be facing the other way. Those teeth are for driving a PTO unit in an 18 transfer case and for driving another gear in a 20 transfer case. When you turn the gear around you will see a recess for the washer and nut to fit into the gear. That will account for having enough thread contact.
