I was about to take my 3 year old son for a quick ride. when he was climbing in he could not resist the urge to push the fuel pedal to the floor. after taching sky high for 5 or so seconds I abandoned the car seat straps to turn the key off. pop then the engine struggled to run. I still have 158 psi in every hole. the rocker arms all move. and fuel pops out of the carb. and when I replaced the points they were instantly burnt along with the contacts on the dist. cap and rotor. do you think my timing chain jumped?

Describe "pop." What carb? If backfire through carb, it sounds like you either blew a power valve (if your carb has one) or a gasket. The gasket at the base of the throttle plate are notorious for causing vac leak on a 2g. Only 4 bolts to take a look-see.

yah it is through the carburetor no power valve I'll check the gasket and change the condenser . I appreciate the helpful input.
on a side note does anyone know how to adjust valves on these motors
    mine ticks a lot

sure it isn't timing chain slapping against cover?

if you can get it to run a little , spray the base plate with carb cleaner. any big change there means a leak...

Yah it does back fire through the carb. and fuel comes out . at wide open throttle the jeep dies and when you let off pop and fuel comes out of the carb. I took the carb off and I could see carbon deposits on the back side where there seemed to be a leak.

thanks I need the help and I am useless at carb tuning. I rebuild it every year and get just a summer out of it.

If it was running fine before the "event" than double check timing. Simple to do and it will eliminate a few things. Don't start looking deeper quite yet or creating other issues. It sounds like a timing thing. It could of sheared the distributer drive gear pin.

if you put a timing -light to it is the mark steady or bouce around. " unusual marks" ???? could you discribe the marks??? just kidding ..this one time a kitten jumped under my hood to keep warm. ....I heard a noise at start up,, just reved it and the noise went away.anyway ,,,,,,,, is the dist. loose and may have spun alittle.

Pull it around to TDC and pull the dist. cap and see if the rotor is still pointing towards #1

Hmmm... I'm still voting vac leak or related carb problem. With a backfire through carb, the entire intake and parts of the carb rapidly go from ~18"Hg to a significant amount of positive pressure, and then just as rapidly back to vacuum. Havoc on your intake/carb gaskets and small parts.

on a few occasions the needle was stuck open and flooded it bad I fixed it buy bending the tab on the float so the needle couldn't drop as far. the problem happened a few more times and I just kept bending the float (new copper float) the last time i did it i seemed to have gotten it right. and it ran pretty good until this incident. i checked the needle and seat all seems to be good in the carb but I may be missing something. are the napa carb kits any good? that's what I've been using.

well I lost my fire during trouble shooting. when I did the #1 TDC check the timing was a bit retarded? it was pointing close to 1 but a little off. and I can't turn the dist. enough to get it timed because the vacuum advance hits the engine. but now my spark is gone anyway so I am leaning towards coil. napa should have my parts in soon. (carb kit , points&condensor, cap, rotor, plugs, wires)
