Windshield install..... help!

I am trying to install my glass. I have worked the lip all the way around the frame. The bottom, sides and top corners look good. The top edge just won't slide in. I have the gasket lip over the edge but the glass wontpush over. I have been pushing on it but I just don't want to break it.

Any suggestions? I will try to get a picture.

I just put new glass in mine two weeks ago, tried three times before finaly getting it in, used lots of soap and plastic implaments (spelling) . iT WAS A REAL PITA
1st attempt was with the rope trick ( found on this site Did a search on windshield glass) and I almost had it in but I to was afraid of breaking the glass.

2nd attempt was with the rope also and again felt I was going to break the glass and gave up, called my freind that installs store front glass, took both uf us pushing and pulling ( I thought it would break but he was braver than I, and it was my glass) and it finaly went in.

USE LOTS OF SOAP!!
NO METAL TO PRY WITH, USE POINTY WOOD OR PLASTIC.
4 HANDS MAKE IT A LOT EASIER
also it was a big help to take the frame and put it on the pool table.


you can always take it to the glass shop and have them do it.

I am all stressed out.........I give up. I called the glass shop. I am taking it there in the morning.:evil:

Is the lock strip out of the seal? If not, remove it first then install glass then install lock strip. The lock strip removed allows the seal to flex much more and get the glass in without breaking.

 

I haven't done this in several years, but it was hard to press in the glass... thought it would break first. But it didn't. Also, I used nylon carpenter's twine (mason's twine, etc). Thinner diameter might give you more room to work with.

 

When I replaced mine, with a new seal, the glass shop had to grind a 1/4 " off the top and one side to get it to fit. They said the new seal is different and thicker than what was stock. Don't know if that helps at all????

When I tried to do mine it was real hard and I was afraid I was going to break it, took it to a glass shop he called me to say he couldnt get it in, he thought the seal was wrong ( brand new seal) he ordered one from his source and it went right in. I got my seal from Krage, only problem I ever had with them.

 

I took mine to the glass shop too.

 

I just got back from dropping it off at the glass shop. The guy told me that this frame might be smaller and the glass may need ground down in a spot or two. This is the same shop that cut the glass for the rusted out frame. I should get it back Monday or Tuesday.

 

Don't feel bad, I had a mobile glass service do mine. They had a hard time too and the glass was NOS (no grinding or cutting). I think if they had to do it again the work would've gone much smoother.

I don't know if it's relative or not but the mobile guys (yes, 2 of them) wanted me to sign a waiver not holding them responsible if the glass broke. My response was if they didn't know what they were doing I would call somebody else. They were real careful.

 

just got a call from the glass shop. It's done. They had to grind about an 1/8" inch off the top of the glass to get it in. Made me feel better. $45 ......worth every penny.
