Been doing a little searching on this.
    dead horse
My problem is last couple times I've driven the 62:hurrican: its been smoking gradually getting worse. haven't driven it much since then so its been sitting a week or 2 at a time. It Seems to be black smoke on accel. not the normal bluish smoke that I had before rebuilding from just plain burning oil. I gather this black smoke is from excess fuel, running rich.
Next thing is I checked the oil and it has a nice little fuel smell to it. I think but can't remember perfectly if it did this before but I believe the old engine did this too before the rebuild. I am using an old fuel pump and I rebuilt the carb which seems to be working good.

Would the fuel pump leaking into the crankcase cause the black smoke??
If so is there something to look for on the fuel pump to see if fuel is getting by something?
Cracked, excess play in cam arm...

I'll be checking the plugs this weekend to see what they look like.

I think I'd be looking at the carb. Maybe some foreign material between the needle and seat allowing too much fuel in or wrong float setting. Possibly a float that's too heavy also. Any of these will cause a rich condition causing exactly the symptoms you describe. The fuel pump leaking into the crank case will cause the fuel smell in the oil obviously but unless REALLY diluted it's less likely to cause black smoke out the tailpipe. It takes very little to foreign material between the needle and seat to cause an issue like this. You're on the right track to check the spark plugs. If black and sooty or smell like raw fuel then definitely look at the carb or fuel induction system.

Yea Im having the same issue with my 68. My plugs are being coated BLACK while its blowing the black exhaust out the tail pipe. Iv run it to the point the plugs get clogged and no longer fire and the jeep dies. I replaced the fuel pump thinking the fuel was leaking into the crankcase but still having the issue. I guess next will be looking at the carberator.

x2 on what nick said, sometimes if you have a piece of foreign matter between the needle and seat you can shut off the fuel supply to the fuel pump, start it and run the carb out of gas, then open the fuel supply back up and the sudden gush of fuel entering the carb will flush out whatever is between the needle and seat
