I am having issues with a build i am finishing. I have installed a new axle under a jeep with new calipers, and new master cylinder. The brake peddal is very stiff and as i drive the pedal become more stiff and the calipers seem to not release. I am using a master for a 78 CJ with no booster, disk front drum in rear. I am not sure why the pressure builds and is not releasing. Right now i have bled and adjusted the rear brakes but have no brakes in the rear. Pretty much the when you touch the brake peddle it is tight.
I am thinking of cutting the push rod a bit more and see how that helps.
    Any suggestions would be helpfull

Did you change the proportioning valve when you did the swap? If not that is your problem.

First place I'd look is at the pedal pushrod. needs to have some play. Second, is the master cylinder you used for a drum/drum set up or from a disc/drum set up? If for a drum/drum set up then it's probably the residual pressure valve holding pressure on. Most CJ's had disc drums on them in '78 but that doesn't mean the books or computer the person at the parts house used was correct. You have to specify or you can get the wrong one. I'd also look at the brake hoses. Were they new or used? If used, they could be damaged internally causing the brakes to be held applied. I'd also look at the proportioning valve. Did you use a stock drum/drum unit or a disc/drum unit? More info would be helpful here but these are a few ideas.

Thanks for the replies, i am positive the master is for my set up which is disk front drum back non boosted. I am pretty sure you are right about the push rod, i had to trim it a bit and even after a small trim i had to add force before i could install the keeper on the push rod. From what i hear that should not have pressure when brake peddle is not applied. I have not installed a proportioning valve as i am now confused which brake it should be installed on front or back. I thought it was supposed to be on the back but from what i see maybe it is the front.
I will be trimming my push rod in the morning i will let you know how it turns out.
    Thanks
