Well I have searched for days and cannot find what I'm looking for. I need to rebuild my front end. My problem is getting the hubs off. You see, I have never ventured into a 4X4 front end. It kind of looks like the hubs are pressed on and requires a puller to remove but not real sure. It is a model 30 open knuckle. I have the outer warn locker off, that part is kind of a no brainer. Any help would be very much appreciated.

There are 2 nuts (2 1/16") and a washer in beween them. the washer should have 2 tabs bent over the edges of the outer nut. Use a screwdriver to force the edges of the washer back straigh, then use a socket to get the outer nut off, take the washer off then use the socket on the inner nut. Spindle hub should then come off easily. The socket for the hub has a very thin wall, they are made of stamped and formed metal, they run about $8.
here is what they look like.

Thanks Mike, but I am not seeing the double nut you are pointing out. Here is a picture of what I am trying to remove. It turns with the axle and the axle will move freely (slightly) side to side within it. I just didn't want to put a puller on it without knowing if I will whack it up or not doing so. Again, thanks.

that looks like part of your lock out hub. IIRC there's a snap ring that holds that in place, can't tell by the pic.

Yes, thats part of the locking hub. Remove the snap ring and then the nuts and stuff will be under it.

Is it suppose to come off easy? I have the snap ring off, if it is the one on the end of the axle shaft. Do I just have to be a little more forceful with it?

    Thanks

    nickmil In mothballs.

Some times the end of the splines get burred a little and make it hard to get the locking hub drive gear off. Gently pry it off or carefully use a puller to get it off. After that, follow the info listed above. If you don't have a puller or can't pry it off a small needle file can sometimes remove the burrs.

Thanks Everyone, when I get a chance to get down to the shop I'll give the "power of the force" a try.

All good advise. My 2 cents would be: soak it in solvent, tap lightly all around the hub drive gear (without damaging anything, like the splines), and gently pull it off. In addition to burrs, moisture can enter along the splines of the axle causing rust to sieze things up. I've had success in similar situations by lighty tapping while pulling. Good luck.

I did manage to get them off. Just took a small amount of persuasion. Now I just have to stop at the FLAPS on the way home tonight and pick up one of those super sized sockets.

    Thanks to all

Yup, I know what you're talking about. Saw one online for $8.99 plus shipping. Just stopped by the NAPA FLAPS and was quoted $32. WOW! Big diff. Maybe a neighbor has one I can barrow.
