My 304 has a hard time idling down. I have the idle adjusted to the correct RPM, but the cable is hanging up just off idle. I have to blip the trottle with my foot to get it down. I installed a new cable, but it is very long resulting in a loop to get it hooked up. Is there a shorter option?Or just a different option?

4WD Hardware sells different length cables. For a 72-75 CJ with a 304, there is a 35 3/8" long one. They come in other lengths for various years and engines. Perhaps one of the others would work better for you.

You sure the problem is the cable? When the throttle shaft in the carb wears it'll hang open just above idle.

Lokar sells a real nice cable kit if stock isn't important.

Poor adjustment or broken bimetal spring will make the choke hang on and the choke idle stop will climb the fast idle cam, causing a fast idle. This can sometimes be overcome by 'blipping' the throttle.

A long loop in the accelerator cable is good, because it reduces the amount of curvature per unit length. Make sure the alignment is good, disconnect at the throttle end and move the cable manually, feeling for any hangups.

You know I thought about that last nite whle out Jeepin. I am going to check the choke stuff, as now that you mentioned it the choke high idle may be hanging up. Blipping the throttle is exactly what I have to do to get teh idle to drop. I am seriously contemplating going to a manual choke. Thanx for all the replies and ideas.

I had the same problem when I changed over to a 4bbl edelbrock. Bought a new cable and it didnt fit very well. Had to make some adjustments. Found that the cable coming through the fire wall at the plastic piece was catching there. Honeslty dont remember what I did but I tinkered around with it in different postions and fixed it. And i agree with you about the manual choke. I have had more problems with this stupid edelbrock carb. I am thinking about switching to a different brand. I still cant get a smooth idle
