Rhino lined tank?

Has anyone taken a new gas tank (under seat) and had it Rhino lined or coated. Seems like a good idea but wondering if I'm overlooking something.

 

What's the benefit?

 

Keep it from rusting from the outside in.

 

Well mine rusted in the opposite direction. Any decent paint should be able to keep it protected as long as you dont keep your floor boards full of water.

 

when I got my jeep I sandblasted it then etch primered it, then herculined the entire inside of the tub, plus all the separate pieces too(seat belt brackets, the seat brackets I fabbed, shifter boot rings) as well as the entire gas tank and the gas tank strap I fabbed. Previous posts are probably correct in that just painting it should suffice, but I herculined mine just so it would match everything else in my interior. It will cost more and take more time to rhino line it, but if your tub is already rhino lined, it will look nicer overall that way. I say do what you want, I don't think you are overlooking anything mechanically.

 

Problem is in this area dust/dirt accumulates around the tank then water gets in and turns it to mud and cannot easily be cleaned out. Had two tanks pinhole rust from the outside in, even with a quality paint. It took a long time, but did happen. I haven't had one of mine rust from the inside out....yet.

 

I sandblasted and painted mine about three years ago with the rest of the jeep. I'm patching it for the second or third time. I think some of the deeper pits are the trouble now. Prolly going to order a new tank and have it ready, either paint or coating for next years leak.

 

I did a search on poly tanks and it looks like they come with they're own problems. No perfect solution I guess.

 

The Little White Jeep's tank is rhinolined. One thing I did not consider was that the body now has 1/4 inch liner and the tank has 1/4 inch top and bottom SO My seats diddn't fit back down on top of the tank! DUH!
Banged on everything and made it fit. I really don't see ant advantage in hindsight.
I am on my 2nd rhinoline in the jeep. the stuff really does suck in my opinion.
Rhinolining has the consistancy of a beer coozie and has not "stuck" to the jeep at all. anywhere there is a gap it holds moisture and rust's the crap out of my tub.
Rhinolining's warranty does not repair damage to the truck just replaces the crappy product that caused the damage in the 1st place.
I REALLY,REALLY wish I had painted my tub in hindsight.

In this case the prep wasn't done correctly. When the prep is done correctly and the application is done correctly, you can't get that stuff off. I'm not promoting its use, just the experiences I've had with it. A friend had the grill on his flatty rhino lined and when he rolled it, the only place then stuff didn't stay on is where the metal tore and tore the liner with it. It still stuck solidly to the metal though. I know others have had similar issues like you have Donnie, but again, that is normally a prep issue.

 

I am not here to "Bash" anyones product, just give my experence.
The first prep was done by me,second by the rhino people themselves. Both failed within 6 months.
My point was that paint worked on my tub for 45 years just fine , it has only taken 5 years for the liner to ruin it.

I hear ya. Sounds like they weren't applying it correctly. One of the reasons I probably won't line any of my Jeeps, Just paint them.

 

I had my steel tank coated inside and out by a shop using "Gas Tank Renu" If it leaks agian, they repair it. I think the coating is similar to POR 15. Its proprietary so I am just guessing. I wanted to keep the steel tank in order to keep the return line from the pump. I am not aware of any polytank that has a return line. I might well be mistaken though.
