I was given a 1964 jeep cj-5a tuxedo park mark IV. It runs pretty good, has a few problems. No major rust problems. I will post pics when I get on my other computer. My plan is to fix it up enough where I can run around in it. Once things start breaking faster than I can fix'em I plan to do a frame-up restoration. All the tuxedo chrome parts are there(some need to be re-chromed though). The previous owner said one of the wheel cylinders leek, so you got to put brake fluid in it every once in awhile. I have a book on the way about restoring and working on a jeep on the way. What kind of brake fluid are you supposed to use on this particular year of jeep. And also how big is the fuel tank. Thanks for the help.

p.s This has been a wonderful website

Regular brake fluid works fine, DOT3. Though we've had discussions in the past about pros and cons of other (silicone based) fluid in the past.

    10 gallon underseat tank.

I thought the fuel tank held more than 10 gallons.. I may be wrong, but I thought 10 gallons plus 1 gallon reserve making it 11 gallons.

Reserve? What is it that you mean? The tank may technically be 10.5 gallons or whatever but I sure wouldn't count on getting more than 10 gallons in an underseat tank. YMMV.

*Disclaimer - currently I have a rear mount 15 gallon tank

Don't have any reserve on them. 10 and a half gallons and engine stops cause of lack of fuel. Gauge reads high, darnit.

Any one besides me old enough to remember the early VW bugs and their 1 gallon reserve switch on the under side of the dash?

Yep (but I was very young then). My Dad had a '60 that he bought because of his long commute then. However, it had a gauge, but it was a mechanical gauge - there was a cable from the tank float to the gauge on the dash. I don't recall if this car had the reserve tank though.

Does anyone happen to know the size of the bolt on top of the master brake cylinder?

I dunno, mine were always so corroded that I needed a pair of vise-grips or a pipe wrench to get them loose. :)

My 64 CJ5 has a 1 1/8 nut on top of the master cylinder. I just started working on my brakes. My looks a lot like yours, been trying to decide how to go from here. Your body looks a lot better then mine.

Wow, that's a gem. If it were mine, I'd clean it up, buff it out and drive it for a while.

Don't worry - you'll get ahead of the mechanical problems. Some issues are to be expected with a vehicle that's been out of service for a while. Plus, it's nearly 50 years old, and any car that old will have unexpected problems.

Also, I'd suggest that you go through the brakes from top to bottom - don't bother trying to patch them up. New master cylinder, new wheel cylinders, shoes, spring kit, turn the drums, new rubber hoses.

Many of the parts you need can be had from your FLAPS - friendly local auto parts store. Try and build a friendly relationship with an old fashioned parts store in your neighborhood, if you can. Look for a store with a run down building, greasy floors, paper catalogs, and old guys behind the counter. The older counter guys can usually find the stuff you need.

Also, I'd suggest you look at old posts about brake upgrades. If you have 9" or 10" ID brakes, the most sensible route is probably to replace the whole assembly with new 11" brakes. Be sure to find out about this before you spend a lot of time and money on 9" or 10" brakes.

BTW this is a really nice Jeep, just as it is now. It's worth your time, effort and money to get it into top shape. You don't even need to restore it - the original patina is way cool just as it is. How many hubcaps do you have? They are wildly expensive, if you can find them.

Well i got to do a few little things to get it road worthy. My big concern is the title is missing. How hard is it to get one?(I know it varies from state to state). In a few days I can get into a garage and start rebuilding the brakes.(dont worry it wont be outside but for a few days). I have two hubcaps. I can stop asking all these stupid little questions once I get my shop manual but where is the fuel pick-up in the tank? Thanks for the compliments. I have always wanted a willys mb but could never find one that wasnt completely thrashed, completely restored(with a hefty price tag), or one that had been tricked out and unoriginal. I had kind of given up but a close farmer friend of mine said he needed barn space and asked if I wanted the jeep. Now I am the proud owner of a cj-5a.

That is a great lookin' JEEP. You are one lucky owner.R) to the farmer for giving this to you. I was looking at your profile and I noticed you need to update it. There may be members in your area who could help you with stuff. Just a thought though. :) Great find though. Keep us posted.
