If you use the V-6 input shaft/gear, yes. You will need the input gear (bull gear) to match whatever transfer case you are using. They are pretty much the same otherwise. Nickmil

You will also need to swap the bearing retainer along with the main drive gear.

The main drive gear has a half moon notch, after you remove the retainer rotate the main gear to that notch and it will pull out the front. Watch out for all the roller bearing that will fall out when you remove it. If you have an extra 11.5 inch main drive gear and retainer, i'm looking for one.

tried that, but it seems that the input shaft gear is still hitting the gear below. is it that close? seems if i could get the bearing out first, i'd have wiggle room, but it won't come off the shaft (yea i took the clips off) i'm gonna give it another shot here shortly...maybe i just didn't try hard enough

me neither...but the haynes manuel does say that a puller is used to remove the bearings then the input shaft comes out so...i need a puller?! oh and i only have the one 11.5 inch input (outta five trannys that i have)

I have removed them without a puller. The factory manual will tell you to use a puller too. There's a '72 and '75 factory manual online.

I used a flat bladed screwdriver and a little piece of steel as a fulcrum and levered up on the snap ring slot. A little at a time, move around the bearing.

never could get the dang bearing off the input shaft or the input shaft out:mad: but i did find one of the reasons the trans went out to begin with...there was like a 1/8th inch of slop

If you decide not to fix it I could use the front bearing retainer if you want to sell it.

Two ways to do it. Remove front and rear bearings, then you can lift the input/output shafts up and slide the input out then work the output as an assembly out the top. Other way is to remove the cluster gear shaft, let the cluster gear drop into the bottom of the case (carefully), the pull the input out. You might still need to remove the input bearing to do this though. Nickmil

thanks everyone, it has become painfully obvious that my jeep is testing my worthiness as some sort of "right of passage". it has also become painfully obvious that the bearing must come out to remove the input shaft. i will persist and succeed and be a better person for it right?...right?R)
