Howdy again all, more questions (I feel I'm over asking  ) (I have searched too, like 30 pages of searches for bumpers, no luck on my Q)
Anywho, my 47 2A's front bumper was cobbled with a torch, and then braced on the new "wings" (what?!) with angle iron. If I rolled into a tree it would bend and tear. Well, I need to change that. I can't figure out how to get them off without messing up spring hangers (c-style, should I upgrade?) and then how to get the bumper off... I'm afraid of misaligning everything. Any good designs? I'd like to integrate a receiver hitch in the front for the M8000 take about winch, Warn of course. Then I can put a ball hitch with d-shackle for recovery too. So in short, how do I remove it, what's a good design, and how do I re-attach the bumper so it won't rip off of my frame rails?

Then, on the rear. I have some flimsy bumper which I think is stock. Not torched... But hammered, badly. It's way out of whack. Then, someone bolted a once nice draw bar to it, and why yes, an i$3#t got hold of an ARC welder and you guessed it, welded it tighter than a battle ship. All the bolts, all the seams, everything. I'd like to replace it too. Nothing to worry about with the perches though. Just some grinding. Any other plans for it? If possible an integrated receiver for the Warn and a pintle would be amazing. And call me crazy but I would love to keep my draw bar on there, for aesthetic reasons. Maybe refitting it with the new bumper is possible? New Grade 5 or 8 hardware and no welds?

And I searched for this thread too, no luck. Somewhere in the way past someone did a towbar spare tire carrier, that mounted to the rear when not in use, I'd enjoy this feature too. Where is the thread on how to? Please and thanks.

Last, but not least, side tire carrier, can't find one, want to fab up my own. Go to the junkyard and rip one off of a TJ or YJ? Or does someone have a plan for it?

Thanks again, millions of thanks everyone, it's certainly a lot to me and I'm learning a ton of it, being my first car and all.

    heres the one I built.
    2x4x3/16th tube
1" thick recovery points (thru welded to bumper) tied to inside frame rail all the way to the front crossmember. bolted on with a 5/8" grade 5 bolt on each side. has a 3/16" tie plate on the outside of the rail bent over to the 'wings', bolted thru with the 5/8" bolt and two 1/2" bolts (gr.8) farther back on the frame.
receiver hitch thru welded in center.
wings notched for clearance and appearance and boxed.
winch mounts in plate (not shown) on top of rails and bolted to frame, crossmember and thru bumper.
    in fab shop

mounted and waiting for final details

Very nice and clean looking front bumper! Simple design, but very functional!

Packrat, may I please see some more pictures/possible dementions? I may copy yours almost exactly. How did you attach to the frame horns? That's what's confusing me very badly too, I don't want to rip mine off R)
JPflat, Yours is the Jeep I was thinking of :) That's the design that I wanted for my rear. I guess I'll have to figure how to make it work with the drawbar and a receiver.
Clay, don't get me wrong, I think that swingaway has it's place on every Jeep, but it's not how I'll make mine. Maybe for the XJ when I get one, I'll use the design, but I have 2 spare tire's. The matching ND to go on the side of the tub, and then the other one to go on the towbar, so I can take it off and put it on, you know?
Thanks everyone, I'll hunt some steel and get started...sometime...
But does anyone have a pic of like a stock side mount carrier too? I'll try to do a write up when I make mine. No promise though...

    Here's where I'm starting from...
    Rear
    [IMG]
    The attachments
    [IMG]
    The dreaded welds
The rear stuff... Shock mounts, the rivits, so on, I guess I remove it as a hole?
It wont mess with the perches.
And so on and so on
    The front bumper
    [IMG]
The "wings" and angle iron as well as where the tow bar mounts.
    And underneath
    [IMG]
    And more welds

So how do I remove it all without messing up my perches?
    And attach my new bumpers?

    Thanks again
    -Sammy

Id use a cutoff wheel on a 4 1/4" grinder and smooth it out with a grinding wheel. Souldnt be too bad

I got almost all the front one off. My frame horns are sooo messed up, crooked, rusty, welded.
I'll still need to cut the welds, and then grind. It's crookeder than my cousin's teeth (never done gone see a dentist, uses a pocket knife instead, ewwww) they kinda separated, I tried to straighten, and they twisted. My dad said he's got a trick for it so let's hope.
If I used the cutoff wheel, I'll need a new grinder, my craftsman is only good for grinding, so I'll look at a dewalt or something.
Anywho, all I need is steel and demensions and the front will be done, not sure how I'll do the back yet :?
    Very carefully lol
    Thanks everyone

Well... Hmm mine's not that bad, so many ideas :) If anything 2 inches will come off and stay off to get to unmolested steel.

Thank you! May I save them to my HD?
Well if I remember right the 2A's frame rails and 5's rails are the same width?
    I can't wait to get started :D

the front shackle mounts are nothing more than a 1"x2" steel stock with a hole drilled thru (TIP: use a drill press with a 7/8" BI-METAL hole saw) then ground down and around to look right.
Nothing on here (except the steel, and the shackles themselves) was bought. Even the receiver tube was scavenged off an old tow hitch.
My dimensions ended up where they are, cause that was the size of tube in the scrap bin at the machine shop where I get my steel.

BTW, this took less than a week working on it after work for a couple hrs. I needed to get it done for our first race so I'd have tow points.

Well there's my excuse to buy the neighbors press... Mine has a wobble  But certainly shouldn't be hard. Do steel yards have 1/2 solid bar? I think I see how it goes, the shackle mounts go into the frame horns, the bumper slides over and is welded, then some added bracing. I need steel now :D
    Thanks again!!!

thats pretty much it. Take your time and make sure its all sqare and level before you start welding.
Weld both sides of anything going thru the tube.
tighten the square stock to the frame horns to get your measurements for the cut-outs in the tube,
drill the mounting bolt holes last. thats your last chance to get things square.

a 'new stock' steel yard will have everything you want. I didn't use 1/2" stock because I like to overbuild, and 1/2" didn't look right on the shackles.

I built one like packrat's for my YJ, only I angled the sides back a little bit by cutting a small groove and bending them. I also did my front receiver a bit different. For the CJ2A I cut down and boxed the ends of my factory YJ bumper, behind the bumper is a 1/4" thick piece of 4" angle iron welded to the frame. My buddy just got a plasma cutter so we cut the holes for the D-ring/towbar mounts and the bumper slides over them like a cover. I have to clean up the shackle mounts yet a little though. Turned out nice, just have to strip and paint it now.

Andrew, Choice is my home away from home from home from home from home. Erm.. I spend a small fortune there yearly.

Ok fella's, this is what I got so far today. I had to remore 1 3/4" of the front frame, ti was too far gone, plus some huge hole from an old bolt in the front bumper...?
My 1" thick stock I got was...3" and that is too wide. (my mistake, I measued the front AND rear..And numers crossed in my mind and things fell into place... Measure twice and order and pay once... I think...) It was 70 bucks and I had to buy 10 feet. I can most likely look for scrap and save this for a rainy day, sell this piece and get the right size, or just grind it down.
    Now I'm lost.
I have the little boxed portion for the spring mounts (not gonna change that) I was going to slide that 3" stuff in there and bolt it with some G5 or up hardware. Then slide the 2x4 over and be happy. Then my stock is too wide... And I seem to have a bolt and rivit in there. I think I can trash the top 2 and just weld the box portion in there. My dad said put the 1" bar on the outside, but I'd rather it be inside. If I leave the bolt and rivit, I'd need 1 3/4"x1" stock...I'd rather trash them and get 2 1/4" x1" stock.
    Here are my pics.

I'm gonna have to make up that 1 3/4" length that I hacked off to prevent my front tire from rubbing my bumper then. That's easy. But I don't want it to look pieced together and butchered. What would you fella's do?
    Thanks
