    hello everyone.....

I just bought a 65 cj5 with the f head engine not running the previous owner said they had it rebuilt and it smoked very bad.... Well hauled it home and ended up putting a fuel pump on it and new gaskets in the carb...and by the way where is the cheapest place to buy a carb?.....Started up the engine and sure enough the smoke filled the garge So I decieded to run an compression test and all the cylinders stayed in the 118 to 121 psi range. They said something about not getting the rings installed in the right order never heard of this can someone give me so insight on what is going on with this cj??

Yup there is something about the oil rings...........gimmie a sec.

IIRC The gaps have to be seperate and there is a bevel.

blue the best I can tell I ma having a lot of issues with the carter carb Can not seem to get it to stop over filling the bowl and having gas running out the bottom of the carb around the pump lever , so fooding maybe a issue with this engine but it smells and looks like oil smoke, but how can it smoke that bad and have 120 psi compression?

IMHO, that would fuel... Too rich of a mixture. Lean the mixture out. If it doesn't clear up, it's time for a new carb...

the only way to tell if the rings were installed properly would be to pull the pistons out and inspect.
is the oil in the engine contaminated with raw fuel ?
pull the dipstick; check the oil level; smell the oil. replace if needed with straight 30wt
I suppose it's possible the rings never seated....bonami time ?

I am going to ask the obvious........cause there were dipsticks marked incorrectly.

are you sure you have the correct amount of oil in the eng?

If the PO use hard chrome rings in the rebuilt,it will smoke for long time. Untill the the rings take a set. Also if he line up the ring gap it will smoke, they will turn after a while too. I bet he use hard chrome rings

In addition to what the others have stated, things that would cause smoke (short list): Broken piston rings; improperly installed rings... etc., etc.

Also, if the carb is giving trouble, I'm sure your aware that there is a fire danger. Keep an extinguisher handy and perhaps roll the Jeep out in the drive rather than risking burning your garage.

Ok, enough 'ol mother hen' ...

yes gas leaks and fire is a dangerous situation , I have no idea what kind of rings the PO used.

And right now I am looking for the best price and shipping on the solex. One ? about the solex is it the same size(cfms) as the carter or is there any need in upgrades for such a small and old engine?

The Solex is a direct replacement, so if there is any difference one way or the other it's negligible.
