You know, right after I submitted that post I had the picture in my mind of a high back folded forward and wondered how in the heck will any one be able to climb over that cause it will still be in the way!!!! Just not alot of room to work with in these tight machines! Matbe I'll have to look for the folding low backs. Even though I didn't go back with the tool box I can still fab brackets that will let it tilt forward huh?!?!?!

IMHO if you really need rear seat access for passengers there's no better alternative than some original seats.

The YJs and TJs seat had a fold/tilt function to allow rear access (more or less) and are fairly cheap to come by and pretty comfy. Collins Bros has some original style seats maybe, as well as later Jeep seats.

I just ran across this thread in my research for seats. Has anybody tried Bronco II seats?

I agree with the fact that it is easier to get in the back by leaving the seat in place, and just going between the two front seats. Also you don't have to worry about your kids getting caught/hurt on any underseat bracketry. I would just put nice seats in and fix them permanently which even makes them sturdier and safer. Older kids just climb up the rear tires anyway. As far as getting a dog in; It is easier for a Dog to jump to a seat than trying to jump to a floorboard that it can't even see.

I prefer to move the passenger seat for them - typically if we're out in the Jeep for any length of time the space between the front seats is filled with stuff of one sort or another (in the past I've had a CB mounted in there) that I don't want walked on.

If you're using the stock passenger seat bracket there's no bracketry really in the way:

I guess I'm too anal about things....I don't like kids climbing up via the tires. I've had people in the past who thought they could step on the fender flares...

I'll let you know in a couple of days how this really works. I have '78 Laredo seats which are not tiltable. I am having to fab brackets, but am fabbing similiar to original style so that I can swing the seat fwd. (ie, 1/2" bar stock through seat brackets and floor brackets.) I'm trying to still access the toolbox, which I may have to hinge the door of 180 degrees out. I'll know by the weekend if this is going to work in real life and will post pic.

    MSarge,
If you are interested in some stock seats a friend of mine has a pair with the foldable passenger side and all bracketry. The seats need re-upholstered but everything else is in great shape and seems complete. PM me if interested with your e-mail addy and I can send a couple of pics and his contact info. Shipping might be rough though clear across country. Nickmil

I bought junk yard seats years ago. Mine are out of a late 80's Mazda MX-6. They actually fit very well, the backs are very thin allowing me to move the seat back tight against the body. Any further back and I would be into the roll bar. No need for the notch and I am 6'1". As far as folding forward, I find it easier for my monkey's (7 and 8 year old boys) to just crawl between the seats to get to the back. I did put removable pins on my pass. seat so I could quickly remove the seat to get to the tool box where I keep the lug wrench and a bottle jack. I honestly have not missed my original seats yet! I suppose if you were putting adults in the back seat you might need the seat to fold forward, but if an adult can sit back there with their knees hitting their chin, then they can probably crawl over the front seat too. Good luck with your choice and post a pic of your new seats when they are in.
