225 HEI Help

    I am currently working on an HEI conversion. I have all the parts and need some help on finding the number 1 plug on the distributor cap. If someone who has done this conversion could look or knows off hand that would be great. I searched but could find nothing on this. Also when you did this what position did you put your distributor in was the vacuum port toward the fan or were you able to position it another way?

    Finding #1 on the cap?

    I don't understand what that has to do with the conversion? You can move #1 around the cap to where ever you wish assuming you skip a post when you move it.

    I dropped mine in with the vacuum advance pointed so it would clear the fan, sorta at the passenger side. You'll just have to experiment with it to see where it works best and you can time it.

    Yes, I am trying to find #1 on the cap. The cap is not labeled like the cap on my points ignition. If I read right what you are saying it really wouldnt matter which post I start from as long as I follw the firing order from that point and align the roter with that plug?
    Clear as mud, I think?

    Thankyou Krawl and Sparky for your help. I put it in, it fired right up and ran better than I can ever remember. If you havent done this its definately a must.

    may I ask what brand kit you went with? I will be looking into this soon I hope, when the money is there.

    Kit? We don't need no steenking kit. ;)

    Do an EF to OF conversion or pick up a used OF HEI off E-bay. Though from what I've seen, I'd probably drop in a Pertronix unit before doing an HEI conversion.

    Mine came with an HEI but for the effort I think Pertronix is the way to go. JMO. YMMV.

    You don't have to spend big $ for this. I got my HEI for $25 from a junk yard - including the spark plug wires that I'm still using many years later.

    I went the route of getting a distributor, cap and roter from napa from a 75 buick skylark. Finding anything old in the junk yards is hard in my area.

    i had trouble fitting the vacuum adv in and still being able to time it. so i removed the can, locked down the vac advance, plugged the hose and sealed dist up. if i find a shorter can i'll put one back in. runs great!

    I got all the stuff from my local FLAPS. My son works there so I get 20% off. Put an 1 1/2 spacer on the fan to compensate for the vaccum advance. Still have about an 1 1/2 clearance to the radiator. Mine's in 2A so when I put the engine in I made sure I would have plenty of room for a bigger radiator, etc.

    Some of the older 225's were really 231's and had the GM HEI. I have one. Also you can look for a 1975 - 1977 Buick Apollo in a junk yard. They used them too.

    Some older 225s were really 231s? What? A 225 and 231 are different displacements. They aren't the same thing. Casting #s differ.

    Maybe he's referring to early 231s being Odd-Fires? They are the only source for stock HEIs. But because they're Odd-fire doesn't mean that they're 225s. They are distinctly different engines.

    yep, but so many of the external parts will fit. eg. the exhaust mani, etc. so i think that a lot of people just think of them as being the same.

    i thought that the main diff was a longer stroke in 231?

    i tried a 1/2" spacer for the fan but it put it too close to my recored radiator for comfort esp. with any flexing or torqueing with the v6. i may just cut off the connection tube and resolder a short right angle tube back on. but i have other things on the list first.

    larger bore. Different block, crank, etc. You can swap stuff around but it's like a 305 and 350 Chevy. They ain't the same. ;)
