I finally got my 1980 up in the air to get a good look, and I found some driveshaft issues. First is that one of the front U-joint caps of the rear driveshaft is chucking around underneath the strap of the transfer case yoke. It's worn part of the tab off of the yoke, so now the cap slides in and out some too. And to top it off, the bolts are spline drive heads near as I can tell, and I haven't found/ dont have a socket for them yet. It's bad enough that I'm getting a vibration under accel. But it goes away as soon as I let off the gas.
then on the front, the slip joint of the shaft is SHOT! it wobbles all over the place. so that shaft needs replacing...
So I'm in the market for a transfer case yoke, and a front shaft, that measures 31" from the centers of the u-joint caps (installed in the jeep)
And I gotta procure a set of sockets somewhere (or change the bolts).
Lots more to come as I find it. I'm sure

The bolts are usually 12-point, whatever size - probably 3/8".

If you end up buying a new yoke, go ahead and spring for the u-bolt style yoke, rather than the strap-style that you have right now. The u-bolts are much stronger.

x2 on what 53Flattie said. Go with the u-bolt style of yoke. Mucho stronger. The bolt heads may also be torx if female. Nickmil

OK.. I got it up on the lift today to put the last exhaust hanger on,(tailpipes are nice!!!) and check the U joint.. I had to borrow a 1/4" 12 point 1/4"drive socket (that's what it is) but I was able to "tweak" the retainer strap to hold the joint cap tighter for now. I think I'll use my extended time to find one of the "u" bolt types. anybody got an extra?? :)
Lots to do, lots to do... next is tackling the poor running... Tune up parts, check the timing and rebuild the carb.
But it's getting better by the day.. AND I get to drive it!!!
