    Transmissions are definately out of my realm of knowledge, so I will apologize up front if this ends up being one big stupid question :) .

    Since I bought my 80 CJ5 I have a few transmission issues. Primarily it likes to slip out of gear when you let off the throttle (mostly 2nd and 3rd gear). I have come to the conclusion that I should rebuild or replace, the latter would give me a transmission I could rebuild later and then have a spare. After doing some research, I found out that I have a dana 300 transfer case and I thought I had a T176 because of the bolt pattern to the bellhousing. Here is what threw me:

    I cleaned the side of tranny (drivers side) and have not found any numbers yet, the case is definately aluminum. I will drop the mufflers and pipes this weekend to be sure. But while I was surfing i read this description of the T 176.

    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/t176.htm

    In here was the shocker, they said in the shift pattern, reverse is towards the driver and up. Mine is towards the passenger and down, so now I am sort of stumped. I know that the ID numbers are key, but is there such a thing as a T 176 (or T 150) with different shift patterns then mentioned in this description?

    Thanks for advice

    After doing some reading this weekend, I figured the SR-4 is what I would have. But the SR-4 bolt pattern is different from the one under my Jeep. In the link you provided for the T-176, look at the left picture, that is the bolt pattern I have......assuming the left most picture is the side that connects to the bellhousing.

    Here is a picture of a T-176 (T-177 also) taken from the passenger side. The oil filler plug is situated at an upward angle. Note the tag riveted to the front of the case. The number on the tag would indicate what you have:

    5359389=T-177 with 3.82 first gear
    5359390=T-176 with 3.52 first gear.

    Bob, that is good info on those Tremac trannies... I still have a notation in my tranny book from when I first learned this from you on JU, back in 02 or 03 I think :)

    Rev, If the tranny is an SR4, it will have this casting number:
    13 32 xxxx

    I have 2 T176s and reverse is down by 4th, on the passenger side, on both of them. All the decals I have ever seen show it this way as well.
    While the folks at novak are probably a whole lot smarter than me, I think they made a mistake on that one.

    I was hoping somebody would say this, I thought I had it all figured out until I read that description. I got home too late last night to continue my "clean the 20 years of crud of the side of the transmission game":). I had to take batman out on the town to reap the sweet goodies (although I should ask for a percentage) R) . So I haven't found the casting numbers yet.

    Yea, definately don't have to do that. I am definately leaning toward the Tremec.

    Thanks for all of the great insight!

    The T-176/177 has long straight stick, no curves in it.

    The pic posted shows a T-176/177 transmission. SR-4 is different and IIRC has the shifter towards the rear of the tranny and is longer and doesn't have a full removable shift tower like that. Nickmil
