Whadaya know, I just dropped off my manifold before I left for Vegas. 2500 ??? This is for him to do the work for you? I am doing mine for about 900 for the master kit and the machine work including hardened valveseats.

2500 is for everything...i drop off complete motor, he supplies all new parts and does all the work, i get back a rebuilt motor......i think thats a little high, but i am unsure if im gonna rebuild this right now or not...it wasnt leaking, no burning oil, no smoking, etc....ran real smooth...i think i will see what happens when i get the intake back on and put the freshly rebuilt carb back on....

Well, I'm doing most of the work on mine at school, but even with me putting the parts on, I still have close to $1000 in parts and machining by the time I'm done. What kind of warrenty does it cover? might be worth it for the warrenty.

    Thats what I'd do;)
I thought I was going to get away with just a cam/lifters, but after pulling the head, I'm glad I took it apart further. I wouldn't have seen my bent valve and ruined another cam shortly.

If everything runs good, I wouldn't mess with it.

Yeah that's a bit high but there are some things to consider. The brand of the parts used in the rebuild will raise or lower the price. I would assume your guy is using the best stuff but good to ask. What kind of warranty is he offering? Is the shop a reputable one? Usually you get what you pay for but not always.

no clue on the shop reputation, or parts info...this is my first dealing with him, so we will see how good the intake comes out....

I would run it until it gives you a reason not to. Get the ignition sytem upgraded like you are planning, and you'll be good to go. Heck, I thought mine really needed a rebuild because it slowly kept running worse and worse and was making noises. I had recently rebuilt/replaced the carb, and basically put a race car ignition system in it, so I doubted it was simply needing a tune-up. Turned out that my new plug wires were slowly going bad,and arcing all over.

Compression in my #2 is only ~75lbs  and the :v6: still feels/runs pretty strong.

My machine shop will do it for 1200 to 1700 depending on what parts are needed. Last one was $1250 - it didn't need new pistons and the crank was polished.

A general rule of thumb is ~$200 bux per cylinder, buying the parts and doing the assembly/disassembly yourself. That's with the 'normal' amount of machine work being farmed out, such as boring & hot-tanking the block and re-doing the heads.

The big money in a rebuild is the labor. $2500 sounds a bit high, but I haven't had one done for quite a while. I ended up with right around $1100 in my 4-banger when it was all said & done, not counting all the stuff I bought at HarborFreight to make the job easier...

Just had mine done cost $2200, but I had some extras done. Complete rebuilt included: Everything hot tanked, master kit including pistons, bored, blocked, hardened seats, moly top ring, double roller timing chain, comp cam, hi-vol oil pump, crank shaft was ground and polished, and I had the engine balanced. The engine was torn down and assembled by the shop. I figured since I was spending at least $1000 to $1200 for machining and parts I might as well have them do the rest and have a warranty to go with it, especially since my engine building experience is limited. I was quoted anywhere from $1800 to $3500.
But then again I live in California....seems everything is more expensive here. I guess thats what ya get for nice weather and earthquakes:)

While not the same engine, I had my 134 rebuilt last summer. I got quotes that ranged from $1100 to $2500. This was for a full rebuild, I drop off the engine and they give it back to me ready to drop in. I ended up going with a shop that quoted me about $1400.

There are also places on the internet that do rebuilds. While I'm not suggesting you go with one of them, you could at least do some price comparisons.

My advise is to shop around. I suspected that the people who quoted me the $2500 didn't really want the work.

My engine builder quoted me $1400 to rebuild my 225 back a few years ago. He ended up doing a complete mildly race prepped Chevy 283 for me for $1000. I didn't even bring him a block. I got a V8 and saved $400 :) Shop around, prices vary a lot.

If it ain't broke don't fix it! I bought my Diplomat (79) at exactly 100,000 miles and stuffed a light racing cam and 4bbl carb on it and beat the **** outa it in the last 12 years and still have 30 psi oil press. at low rough idle and starts Gauranteed! and spins 60 series meats on dry asphalt.

My opinion is listen to the engine and get the feel of it.. it will tell you when something is amiss. If you got no smoke on startup or under load and oil pressure is good then don't waste the money unless you wish to have the peace of mind that your starting off with a zero mile engine.
    My opinion, Cheers!

$2500 seems high. I have about $1100 into mine. Mach work to heads and block + master rebuild kit. I'm putting it together. Geez Ive seen the reman engines for $1200-1500 -like Jasper etc. Check them out on ebay.

From my experience with the 225, even smoking doesn't mean rebuild anyway. Last time my 69 was smoking I just needed a head job on it. It had bad valve seals.
