    Okay, first post. Here goes.

I just bought my first CJ. I have wanted one for so long, over 10yrs now, that I was beginning to think this day would never come. Actually, it still hasn't come yet, because its being shipped. I bought it off Ebay. Supposed to be here sometime after memorial day. Here is a link:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4640530145&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:US:1

    The Jeep is a 1970 CJ-5, has a V6, 3spd, and manual drums.

My question is about the drums. I think one of my first projects (after completing previous owner's projects) is going to be improving braking. I have scanned a couple posts on this site about 11" drums, but when I do a search, nothing shows up.

I don't think I want to do a disc conversion. Drums don't bother me. I have a '66 Chevelle with power drums, alot heavier than a Jeep, and it stops well. I think with the Jeep, it is the manual part that concerns me.

So, for my first of what I'm sure are going to be many questions, could someone please point me in the right direction for what I need to do with the stock drums? Thanks.

welcome to the site! i think you'll like it here. lots of good people with lots of experience.

try these links on this site about an 11" drum swap. you might want to make sure that your cj still has 10" drums.

also when you get the cj in put the pics up on the intro site or for that matter you can link to the images you liked to on this thread.

    again welcome from iowa!

    Welcome from KS!

    Good looking Jeep.

Regarding the drums. 11" drums will put you in the WS and fast, especially if it's all 4 wheels and drilled. They work well after they've been wet too if drilled.

What specifically are you looking for with your search? The search function can be tricky. But I can usually make it work. ;)

Looks like a great Jeep...can't wait to see the "Intro" pics once you get it in your hands. Also, where you located? Could catch it from your profile.

The stock 10" drums will work pretty good. I ran mine for years and it stopped fine. I now have disk brakes up front but still have my 10' drums in the rear.

welcome from VB, VA. I would get it home and test everything out before planning any mods, you may find that the brakes are already doin a good job.

Welcome from Golden, Colorado. I agree with $Sink. Get it home and see what you have before tearing into it. Plenty of info and help on this site when you do decide to change something..

Wow! Thanks for all the responses!

When I couldn't find the link, I was searching "drums" and "11", but since then I found a starter page for new guys with pictures and everything. This site is great!

I'm in Lawrence, KS. I will update that stuff as soon as I get it figured out.

Will post some pics when it gets here. I am (hopefully) just going to try to get this thing roadworthy in time for some summer fun, then tackle bigger projects this winter. I will definitely check out the stock brakes before I go and start buying a bunch of parts. It's not like I'm trying to make this thing into daily driver; I doubt it will see more than a 1000 miles a year, and I plan on using a tow vehicle when I take it any kind of distance to the trails.

    Thanks again!

    Great! Another '70.
Like Mcruff I've got disc on the front and the old 10" out back - works well. It wasn't bad with the all 4 10" drums.
I noticed the add said something like "original 231 v6" but I assume it's really a 225 of.
    Welcome & good luck.

X3. Power disk brakes in front, 10" drums in the rear. It stops in a HURRY now. :)

The '62 had manual 11" drums on all 4 corners and stopped very well there too. Not nearly as touchy on the braking.

i did the d27 disk and d44 11" conversions. i figured with the chevy 350 conversion i might need it and that i was going to use power steering which i later decided against due to space issues.. i'm in the middle of putting in a power brake booster setup. here is what it looks like as of today.
welcome from boston. someday this will be my daily driver. congrats on your purchase...it's addicting.

i've got 10" manual drums all the way around. stop well, i can lock em up if necessary. they auto adjust by backing up.

anyone ever try drilling 10"drums? just curious since they fade when wet like most drums
