Mystery rod from bellhousing to tranny crossmember

1965 CJ in question:
Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the rod that attaches to the transmission crossmember and thru one of the mounting holes of the bellhousing? It approximately 16 inches long, threaded on one end, and has a ball on the other much like the one on the clutch linkage...only larger. The threaded end is double nutted in what appears to be a method of adjusting tension? Cant find a mention of it in the FSM unless I overlooked it ...

Mine doesn't have it , but I think it is the infamous torque cable for the V-6's

mine has it...I wondered why I was putting it back on after installing a new clutch, tranny and transfercase. Seems pretty useless to me.

An old mechanic told me that cable is supposed to have a certain amount of tension on it to help control clutch chatter by controlling relative movement between the cltuch linkage and engine/tranny. Don't know how true this is but sounds reasonable.

 

The v6 is attached to the frame w/ a rubber mount.:v6:

They had them on the 4's too.
The WWll jeeps actually had a torque reaction spring on the left front leaf spring. Seems the earliest jeeps had a bad habit of veering left towards oncomming traffic when you let off the gas and braked. I think I have a few lying around if you need a pic.

 

that's different grannyscj. The V6 has the cable also that is similar to the 4 banger version posted above. It does not thread directly into the bellhousing, but has a metal tab that is fastened by one of the bellhousing bolts. I will try to post a pic if I get time to take one.

Please note. the mounting bracket also has a clip attached for the parking brake cable (the cable on the left). I realized this pic my be misleading.

 

That must have been discontinued by '70, mine doen't have it. To make sure what I'm looking at, is that the bolt just below the throwout fork on the bell housing's left side? What does it attach to on the tranny?:v6:

 

It doesn't seem like they would keep that "ball bracket" on the crossmember if they were not going to use it?

 

you are right. The bolt is the bottow left (using the picture angle as reference) bolt that attaches the tranny adapter to the bellhousing. That is a T86 case and adapter.

 

My '70 had it. I took it all off when I swapped to the sm420.

 

My '71 was pieced together by the PO and I dont have anything on mine. It is going back together in two weeks, do I need something on the transfer case? The only thing left is half the rubber mount on the frame and no brackets.

 

I would recommend securing the TC. You can buy a new mount, although it may not be identical to the original one on your 71, you can make them work.
