Just sold my wife's Camry, my XJ is currently down, the 460 in my 4WD F-250 sucks 91-octane (it's modified) to the tune of 11mpg freeway, and my wife drives the Durango, so I've been using the '71 CJ-6 as a daily driver for the past week or so.

Only a bikini top, no heater, radio, gas gauge, or wipers, but it's fun. The Buick 225/NV3550/4.88/31-inch tire combo is getting around 17-18mpg mixed driving at around 75mph (same as the Hemi Durango, by the way) but I'm gonna start wearing earplugs on the 250-mile round trip to the office.

It's great, but I think that's mostly because I know it's short-term. If I were gonna keep it up I'd add a Bestop Tiger Top, a radio for the long trips, a heater for the winter, and I'd hook up the wipers and fix the gas gauge. But before any of that I'd ditch the fenderwell headers and add some block huggers from Novak and do a 2-into-1 exhaust with a quiet muffler that exits in the rear.

My '69 is my DD around town, minus football/basketball game days/nights, OSU homecoming and other events with too many nuts on the road. Like one of the earlier posts, a bad day becomes a good one the instant you get behind the wheel. Oh, on wet days the Springgreen Special stays in the garage. I do drive it to my deer hunting spots close to home and will use the M100 to load a big buck into...hopefully KCJ

Can a happy jeeper be spotted by the bugs in his or her teeth, just like a happy motorcyclist? R)

My 56 was my DD for about the first ten years I had it. It got about 18 hwy, 15 city, but that was before they took the lead out and started messing with the formulation by adding ethanol.

Both my '73 and '75 were daily drivers. Both went everywhere I drove; several trips to Owens Valley and Grand Canyon from the LA area, and all over the Mojave. I drove my '75 CJ-6 (hard top, 258, T14) from Santa Monica to Irvine every day for a year.

My '75 is pretty much a DD. Last summer I was driving 120 miles round trip to work. My best experience, was coming home one afternoon in the pouring rain, I got stuck in standstill traffic, some guy offered me his hat! Once we got going, my wipers quit, but I was having FUN!!!!R) I finally broke down and put the top back on on Monday, it was off since early April. I've got the original 304/3-speed with 3.73 gears and 31-10.50's and I get around 15 MPG.

Mine was my DD for about 2 years. 78 miles a day between work and school trips. Nothing like trying to get all your repairs and upgrades done between Friday at 5pm and Sunday night so you can get to work the next day. ;) I got about 21 mpg overall. Lots of freeway miles.

A few things to think about here.
Jeeps are uncomfortable for long trips, however the cool factor of driving one cant be beat.
Securing things in a soft top or a no top Jeep is not easy, however Tuffy makes great lock boxes.
I still drive the YJ a day or so every few weeks.

Comfort on a long trip is relative. 5 hours in my CJ was fine for me. Alexis was kinda squirmish but it's ok for me at least.

Nothing like blasting down the highway in old iron getting waves from new Jeeps and motorcycle riders. 8)

Most of the time my driving is about 20 minutes long or less. 15 minutes or less to work so it works as a backup DD well for me.

I agree its a mindset as far as comfort.
We have driven many miles in Jeeps.
From here in Nashville to Orlando. in one day.
But had we taken my old Ram or the XJ I'd been in much better shape when we got there. R)

Mine was my daily driver all through high school (oh so many years ago). Put about 40 miles a day on it between home and school and work. With a 258 (with the YF 1-bbl), T-176 4 speed, 3:73 gears and 33" tires it consistently got 14-15mpg.

Speaking of fixing it yourself, one morning I took off for school (about a 15 mile trip) and reached down to shift to 2nd gear and noticed the shifter was way too short. Turned around and pulled back into the garage and crawled underneath and found the tranny crossmember had come unbolted on one side and was almost dragging the ground. I jacked it up, threw a couple of new bolts in it and took off and made it to school about 15 minutes late. Another time the leaky radiator boiled dry late at night on my way home after work (another 15 miles) and I had to fill up the radiator out of a road ditch to get me home. Another time I had to use duct tape to hold the clutch linkage together in the school parking lot to get me home. So yes, it's good to be able to fix it yourself. I used to joke that I drove it all week and wrenched on it all weekend to make it roadworthy for the next week.

One of my uncles is an old time Jeeper.
    Since the early 50s.
He used to tell us "Boys, there aint but two kinds of Jeepers."
    "Hows that?"
"Dirty, or mad and walking." R)
At the time I didn't get it.
    Know I do. R)

TGREGG- and and i are much alike. i only have 2 vehicles. one is my 55 mile per gallon motorcycle and the other is my '71 CJ5. the motorcycle was my DD til the rain came. now that it is raining, it seems that i have been driving the CJ for about 4 weeks straight to work. the Cj is cheap and so is the insurance. plus, things on it so pretty basic, so i can adjust and repair the CJ on my own. i love both vehicles, but the 10 year old soft top has sprung a couple of leaks.

My 64 CJ-5 gets me to work two to three days a week in winter. When the top comes off I take it every day. When it gets hot the windshield goes down.
