    Yup, my wife and I are in the process of training (he's training us). Arthur still has his nuts so he's a stubborn fellow.

    I've been reassessing this exhaust valve job. It was obvious to me that because the springs were upside down, someone had been in there. Bubba kind of stuff. Discovered that the guides are not seated properly, actually nowhere close. They need to be driven 1" below the deck. This is spec. Number one is about .75 and 2, 3 and 4 are less that 1/2" below the deck. I'm tempted to drive them down further, however the accumulated carbon and crud may result damage to the block. I've ordered new exhaust valve guides (DeBella Jeep Parts) and tooling to install. More money. I will build my own tooling to remove the guides. Here's the brutal reality;

    This partially explains the carbon buildup. This sets me back at least a week but there's other stuff I can do in the meantime. This needs to be done (somewhat) right.

    Will the new guides need honing? Will you need to re-grind the seats, for concentricity with the new guides?

    Yes to all Pete.....tooling and parts on the way. A set back but also a learning opportunity. No worries, I've got this!

    Actually, not honing but reaming. The seats will likely not need to be cut again, but I think just lapping will do the trick. I think it would have ran, but I doubt for very long. Oh well....

    Very Interesting, you are really learning a lot. Got an M38A1 engine that I had bored and honed, the machined head, and the stuff to assemble it all, but got on other projects and never put it all back together. I like seeing your progress and soaking up all this knowledge.

    Dave, the next time around will be faster and easier after all of these new lessons I'm learning. It will also be less expensive since I've needed to buy a growing arsenal of special tools (my special tool drawer is getting full). I'm also guilty of starting projects only for them to stall when the going gets tough. I promised myself not to let that happen with this project.

    No pics tonight, but some updates. I have more parts from DeBella on the way...valve guides, a set of valve stem keepers and a few other little items. I also ordered some quality tools from Woodward Equipment: A 3/8" reamer, valve guide driver and valve guide brushes. I do plan on fabbing up a valve guide puller from some things I have laying around here. I promise pics of that fun little project, making a home made tool that I'll use hopefully more than once in my lifetime. The planets should align since everything should arrive by Friday. Stay tuned....Pete

    What ever happened to: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night". For hell's sake, I was really hoping for my tooling to complete my exhaust valve job. It was snowing but I'm disappointed that USPS didn't come through today. That stuff should have been here yesterday (per their tracking). I even plowed the drive and most of the road....crap.
