There is a '77 for sale down the road a ways that has written in the window something like....." 36,000 driven / 17,000 miles towed $3,500 obo"

It is brown with a white hard top and hard doors. It has no less than 8 gun racks inside but overall looks pretty solid.

    The VIN decodes as:
    VIN: J7F83AH016821
    Manufacturer: Jeep Corporation
    Model: Jeep CJ-5
    Engine: 5.0L AMC 304 V8 2bbl
    Year: 1977
    Transmission & Transfer Case: Tremec T150 3-spd Manual w/ Dana 20 tcase

I was going to call the guy and offer $500. Will that offend him or her?

    Thanks for the input.

$500.00  Seems low to me. I wouldn't want to sell mine for that.

Sounds like a good deal . Buy it for $500 and then sell it for 3500 and you just made 3000.00 But I am sure he won't take that low of an offer.

If he does, might want to see what eles he has for sale. Then post it on this forum and you can meet some of the folks in person who have been posting on here.

If does agree to sell it for $500.00 and you don't want it, post it here and just watch the action.

pictures of the jeep would be helpfull. $3500 is not too far off if it's solid for one of that year model. I'm not sure that all are worth it. I do know that that if I had one for sale for $3500 and it ran wasn't rusted, dented and or smoking bad I'd feel I I wasn't too far off from what I see them sell for. Now saying that if someone offered me $500 for that I probably wouldn't take him seroiusly. Look closely and know what you are looking at before you make a lo ball offer out of ignorance.

Unless there is something seriously wrong with the Jeep that the seller is unaware of, or the Jeep has been sitting there for a couple years, I'd certainly be offended at such an offer.

Well, maybe "offended" is a bit strong, but I'd sure feel like you were wasting my time.

If the Jeep was actually worth that price range, and I was serious about buying it I'd probably start with an offer around $2500 hoping to settle at $3000.

But I'm not a great wheeler dealer either...I'm happy to pay what I consider a fair price for stuff.

I agree with the posts above. My area tends to have lower prices on Jeeps than other parts of the country, but even in my area, the Jeep as you describe it would bring $2500.

I know if I was selling a Jeep and got an offer of $500 against a rig reasonably priced at $2500-$3500, , the conversation would end immediately.

Thanks for setting me straight. I guess I was trying to justify not being able to afford the $3,500. Oh well. I will take some pictures and post them and someone else can give her a go. Will post pics later today.

I hate wheeling and dealing. Tell me what you want for it and if I think it's fair I'll pay it. :D

$500 is very low for a Jeep of that quality it sounds like.

Heck around here I saw no less than three intermediates in a recent "Wheels for You". None were advertised less than $5500. All were very nice looking. One I've seen in person. Alexis wanted it until she saw the price. $7200.

In this area if in decent shape with all hardware, doors, etc, the hard top is worth $500. I'd have to agree with the above. If in overall decent shape that Jeep would probably sell for around $4500-$6,000 in my area because of the factory V-8, hardtop, etc. Nickmil.

Lets see 8 gun racks :? and you were thinking of offering 500$ on a rig a fella has 3500$ on. Is there a large S on your long johns. Do you run extremely fast? Are you driving a bullet resistent Hummer? I am wondering where all those guns went. They probably need sighting in and offering 500 bucks will greatly aid the owner in getting the guns to shoot straight. :p
Thirty years ago good running, straight, ready to go jeeps were worth 3000, any where between Seattle and San Antonio. I would think 2500 from a distance and barter from there. The assumption is that all is well mechanically and sheet metal wise.
    Good luck

The barter phrase was used because the automatic expletive correction
oversight software didn't like my archaic term for people discussing price.
