Just replaced the old distributor and installed a D.U.I. distributor with Live Wires. What a difference! It now has excellent throttle response and much better acceleration.

Keep us posted on reliability...I do not wish to be a pessimist, but the HEI components seem to be questionable these days.

I will. I agree with you but the original distributor was not preforming 100% so I had to do something. I figure with the DUI/GM HEI, I can get parts easily if something does go wrong.

Performance Distributors I believe use the best parts available, IMHO. They respond very well and will take care of any issues without
giving you the old run around. I dealt with Brian and he was good to his word.

Absolutely!, I delt with Gene and he was very responsive. Outstanding customer service. They stand behind what they sell.

"Outstanding customer service." That is the best way to put it. You don't see much of that these days!
I usually try to go to the source to resource parts. May pay a little more, but you also have a verbal
connection. I praised him on their service.

My cj came with a 304 and a new eBay special HEI distributor. I installed it and had no issues. The 360 that I purchased came with a Performance Distributors HEI still in the box but with a receipt from several years ago. It looked like it had been installed but not used. I installed when I swapped in the 360 and found that the base timing wandered 5-8 degrees. A quick glance revealed no obvious issues so I just threw in my other setup to finish the install. One of these days I need to dig a little deeper and see if I can resolve the issue. Glad to hear that they are good on customer service. I’m certainly not expecting anything from them but I am hoping they’ll assist with troubleshooting if needed.

I’d start by checking your timing chain. Simple check. Rotate the crankshaft back and forth by hand with a breaker bar or ratchet and watch the distributor rotor. If there is any delay in the rotor moving with the crankshaft a good bet the timing chain and sprockets are worn.

First thing I checked. The timing chain is good. The issue does not exist with my other HEI distributor installed in the 360. I’m using the same gear (from the distributor that was originally in the 360) as well.

I’m not bashing Performance Distributors at all - I have no idea what happened with this distributor in the years between purchase and ending up in my hands.

I bought my DUI lightly used for $100 over a decade ago and installed on my 258. It’s been stellar. Still using the used live wires it came with as well. I’m strongly considering replacing the msd stuff on my 351c with the DUI for simplicity sake. DUI I believe is the only hei I’m aware of with a decent gear and module. The spark curve is perfect. It fixed a few issues like starting consistency.

Similar experience as bigjohn; I picked up a little used DUI HEI distributor and wires for a good price last year. Immediately, I noticed the 304 started easier, ran smoother, and felt more responsive. Haven’t had a chance to put many miles on it yet, but so far I’ve been happy.
