I just got the cabin heater installed on my Dauntless CJ5 project. Driving around I notice that the air coming in is pretty warm even with the temp selector full cold. I see why people used coolant shutoff valves on the heater circuit in this era.
When I removed the heater from my F head powered Jeep (never going to put a top on that one) I put in a bypass hose. Then I put a clamp on that hose to see if I could just remove the hose and plug the ports. The engine didn't like that; it got much hotter than normal. This experience makes me leery of putting a shutoff on the V6.
Does anyone have experience with using a heater shutoff valve on the Dauntless? When I got this Jeep there was a bypass hose installed so I've never seen it run with no coolant flow through the heater circuit.

I do not run a heater or hoses on either on my Dauntless V6 powered Jeeps, no issues here.

I put a shut off valve in the heater hose in my dauntless...have no issues when it's closed all summer. It's a simple pull cable style.

I've got a heater valve that has a small slot (85 Toyota pickup?) so it never fully closes.
You could tee into the heater hose with a bypass at the center core. Put one valve in each line and open alternatively.

I ran a cable pull control valve in line with one heater hose for probably 28 years with no issue with a Datsun pu heater. Mine is a 231 but pretty much the same situation as a 225.

Sorry to hijack a little. Does this valve just block flow or is it a three way so water keeps circulating, just not through the heater core?

Thanks for the replies. The valve I'm looking at is sold here

It is just a shutoff. Not sure if any of the Inline valves have a 3 way option.
Come to think of it my spare engine has the screw shutoff like this installed. Glad to hear this engine doesn't seem to share the complications the F head has for this issue

Does your heater have the flap inside the box to direct cooler outside air in? And the hose that runs up to the grill?

Mine completely shuts off coolant flow.

Mine completely shuts off coolant flow through the heater core...doesn't affect flow through the engine or the thermostat bypass hose.

I have the flap and that is properly controlled by the cable. The Jeep is set up for the fresh air hose but that is on order still. I'm sure that will help. Still, the air box gets quite warm so I expect a coolant shutoff will bring it down a couple degrees.

Have not used it yet but picked up a cable operated bypass for the heater. Either flows through the heater or continues to flow but bypasses the heater.
