I did a quick search of the past posts and the tech section, but I'm not totally convinced of the answer. So here it goes.... I have a '78 231 with a Holley 4bbl intake sitting in the garage. Will this intake bolt on to my 225 without modification?

it will physically bolt up but the intake ports will not line up properly causing possible drivability issues. If you port the heads and intake to match, then yes, it is do-able. Nickmil.

Thanks Nickmil. I had an incident over the weekend where my 2bbl Holley flooded on steep hills and I am considering possible cures. I saw an ad for the Holley truck avenger with the special vent tube to prevent such things and the wheels began to turn. If the manifold was an easy direct bolt on, I might be tempted to spring for the new Holley. I think I'll let the 231 sit like it is until I need it in the future and pursue more practical alternatives.

JK, you can try fabbing up vent extensions from copper tubing. Someone here made one similar to the avenger... tubing bent in a "U", , turn the U upside down and press fit it into the vent holes. Vent holes are drilled into the underside of the arch, as seen when installed... it might help.

The 2V Holley can be made to work a lot better. Raise the bowl vents, add a vent whistle, add jet extensions, lower the float level, and use spring-loaded floats. Search the archives - there's more about this.

Thanks Tim. That is a lot of information. I'm not familiar with the vents on the 2v, and the jet extensions are Greek to me. But, knowing Holley, I'll bet these items can be acquired anywhere. If you have any "how to" info on these, or pics, please feel free to forward them to me. I have posted before on my conversion to the Holley, and I like this carb. On the street and highway it is perfectly smooth. I am somewhat relieved that there are simple improvements that can be made that won't make me backtrack. I have only two or three items to address on this rig and it will be fully retro-ed. Meantime I will do more archive searches and see what I can learn. Again, thanks and don't have too much fun running around in an "old" Jeep. It's killin' me to have to drive mine everywhere in the desert spring weather!

Do you have the Holley Street Dominator manifold or just a Holley 390 4 barrell carb? Holley says the Dominator will fit both odd and even fire V-6s. Mine works fine with my 225. You can make the balance tube like the Avenger has that connects both float bowl vents together out of a piece of 5/16" fuel line shaped to look like an upside down U. It connects the vent tubes together and also goes around the air cleaner stud. You need to clip out or drill about a 1/4'' hole in the top of the fuel line 'U' to accomodate the venting function. The tube helps in preventing flooding when going up or down hills. The excess fuel sloshes from float bowl to float bowl rather than dumping into the engine...sputter, sputter, die.

There's an article that Greg Schardein sent me from an old Four Wheeler that covers most of it. Some of the parts in that article are no longer available, or have been replaced with newer versions by Holley. He sent me a photocopy, then a PDF of a page I was missing. I must have requested the wrong page; I'm still missing a page, but what I have mostly confirmed what I already knew (or at least believed to be true).

If you send a PM to Greg, I expect he'll send you the complete PDF.

Aside from that, look at the Holley web page, at the parts list. Some of the things I mention above are there.

Update. I put a 4" length of 3/8" fuel/emissions hose on the vent. I will lower the float about 1/16" and give her a try. Thanks for the input. As time goes on and I implement the other mods, I'll report back.
