    Longer than cow mat? :sneak:

That might work on the 240 versions that are of a design with gaps between the inner and outer sections, but the 740/940 versions don’t have voids. And they aren’t interchangeable because the later models used a bigger driveshaft and bearing.

I found the first major problem with this yesterday. I took the whole family for a ride, and with the full weight of everyone in it, I get a driveshaft vibration in first gear when hard on the gas going uphill. My initial pinion angle estimate was a little overzealous. It could be fixed with a set of shims to turn the pinion angle down a few degrees, but I despise shims, and I don’t want the little extra lift they’d contribute. This winter some time I’ll pull it apart and cut off/rotate the spring perches. Yay.

You could have Mcruff make you some steel ones, they should hold up just fine. A far as the height change you'd just be talking a fraction of an inch.

    No thanks.
It’s an afternoon’s worth of work to do it right. Not a huge deal.

I put way too much time into these clips. They each took like 73 bends.

They’re the clips to make the license plate removable. I’ll make another set to put on the (eventual) tire carrier.

No, it’s not legal yet, just an old plate for mockup...

Beautiful! Did you have to heat treat (and/or quench) the steel somehow to make it springy to hold its shape?

"...to make the license plate removable". That sounds like Bonnie and Clyde.

No, the two halves only have to separate < 1/16”, so it’s well within the spring-back limits of mild steel. I made the two tips press against each other when I tacked them, so they have a little tension. As long as nothing ever pulls outward on the plate, it should be fine.

You should at least cover your old plate with your thumb. It's a tradition...

    Front plate mount is done.

I don’t see any reasonable real estate on the front of this thing to stick the front plate besides the winch fairlead. I’m not a huge fan of that look, with the plate sticking out 3” from the bumper and all asymmetrical-like, but it is what it is.

I tried buying one a few weeks back, but 4WP didn’t have the one I wanted, so I left.

I stopped by Ace yesterday and picked up a pair of Maglite clips. These work perfectly for this. I cut a piece of aluminum out of an old boat gas tank I had in my scrap pile, and mounted the plate mount, the clips, and a made a safety cable out of 1/8” cable that will keep the plate from disappearing if it gets ripped off on trail trash.

I made these little clips and soldered the cable into them. One end is bolted to the plate mount, the other is hair-pinned to a fairlead mounting bolt for easy removal. If I’m on a bad trail, I can just pull it off and chuck it in the console.

That's fantastic. I can't believe how bad the roads to your mall are up there that you would need a device like this :D

Now you need a tidy place to clip the plate while winching your way to ice cream.
