Unfortunately life has changed to the point where I can longer hold onto my project 75 CJ5 and I need to sell it. I am in the military and have been selected for pilot training, which is AWESOME, but my life for the next few years will not allow me to haul around a half finished CJ-5, nor afford any free time to work on it. I have been working on a frame-off for the better part of 7 years. The military life style has made it difficult to devote a lot of time to it, but I have made lot of progress. I am what I would call 75% of the way through a frame off and my question to this site is, at this point do you think I'm better off parting out or trying to sell the entire unit? I will list what I've done below. I'm not trying to get rich, I realize what this vehicle and parts are worth, just trying to limit the bleeding of cash.

Frame - stripped down, checked, crack welded, then sand blasted, painted using Eastwood Chassis paint
Dana 44 Rear- Sandblasted, painted, complete rebuild with Yukon Locker and 4.27 gears
Dana 30 Front - Sandblasted, painted, complete rebuild with power trax locker and 4.27 gears. Upgraded to Disc Brakes and has Warn locking hubs, also all new steering components, to include power steering upgrade.
Transmission- T-15, light rebuild bearings and synchros
Dana 20 - Novak Adapters rebuild kit
Driveshafts - both stock, new U joints
Engine - 4.2L, complete tear down, machining, rebuild, new oil pan. Brand new Weber carb, ran it for 30 minutes to check motor after rebuild.
Body - haven't done anything but buy replacement panels, is in rough shape, but definitely workable.

There is more, but that is the major stuff. If I part out, I would likely try to sell a lot of it on here. I appreciate any opinions that you have give. I hate to abandon this project like this, but I just cant justify holding onto it and letting it sit the way it is for 4 more years. I'll post pics

It definitely has promise ... however, this is the big risk you take with a project car. It's really hard to make back much of what you put into it until it's running and driving.

If you have time to part it out, you will likely get back more money that way. But you will likely end up with stuff you can't move, which you will have to scrap or give away. That could be hard if you have a big emotional investment in the project. If it were me, I'd be of a mind to cut my losses and sell the whole shebang. I'd eBay it with a reasonable reserve, and if it doesn't go, list it again. Adjust your reserve depending on how much time you have left to sell.

Give it to a friend or family member who will take pride in finishing it, with the agreement that you get to drive it when completed. ;)

Tim is right. Unfinished projects are hard to peddle and get any $$ for.
I think you would be hard pressed to get $4k as it sits in project state; location of the project also matters.
Complete or in pieces, it still comes down to what someone is willing to pay for it.
If it's assembled and driveable then Ebay or craigslist is what I would do.

I vote sell whole, give to a family member, or put it in storage if you can afford it and it means that much to you. Otherwise take a loss and dump it

What they said. If you part it there is always stuff you have to deal with that doesn't sell.

I would try to find someone somehow that can keep it for you. It only needs 12 feet of a shed or barn. There is more then likely a member here that could store it for you. It is very hard to recover more then pennies on the dollar when in pieces.

Thanks for all the replies. Got some new information today which seals my decision to sell. My wife is pregnant with out first kid!!! Very exciting, but baby + pilot training means I won't have time or money for this CJ for a long time. I'm gonna put all the pieces together I have and atleast get her to where the motor runs before I list it. Look for a classified post in the next few months if you're interested!
