I am wondering if anyone has seen or heard of anyone putting a cj2 body on the cj5 frame?
I bought this '46 CJ-2A last year and have finally got it into the garage to start tearing it down. The body is in good shape and complete except for the tail gate. The driveline has many mods i.e. 198 v-6, muncie 4-spd. trans, AA overdrive before the standard D-18 twin stick, 25 front, & 41 rear with 5.38 gearing.
I have a '69 CJ-5 that had a crap body but an intact, not rusted chassis with factory 225 v-6, T-14, D-18 single stick, 27a front, & 44 rear (2 piece axle) with 3.73 gearing. I got this jeep with my '70 for parts.
I notice that the 5 frame is beefier than the 2 frame (larger channel) and the '69 axles are slightly stronger as well. Besides body mount locations , what else should I be concerned with when it comes to putting this body on the '5 frame. Will the 5.38's work with 44/27 carriers ( I'm thinking not)? The '2A has 11" brakes on all corners which I want to install on the 27/44 axles. What other pitfalls might I be looking at?
I plan a frame up rebuild. I want the flat fender body on the finished jeep. I want the finished Jeep to appear stock but I'm not concerned with "to the letter" originality. The '2A frame has been modified already with the v-6 mounts and p/s bracket up front so it not exactly original.
What do you think? Thanks as usual.

Sounds to me like you have the makings off two (2) potentially great jeeps.
I didn't hear anything in your description of either of them to warrant taking them apart, especially the 2a, flatties are too cool.

It's not at all uncommon to put a flattie body on an early CJ5 rolling chassis.
IIRC, you center the rear wheel openings over the rear wheels, adjust your tub mounts from that baseline. The front wheels will be about 1" farther forward in the fenders than a stock flattie... that's a good thing. :)
I think we have some guys on the board who have done this swap, hopefully they'll chime in with details.

I got the '46 CJ-2A off of E-bay after being tipped off by a fellow ECJ5 member ( it's the one that had the "Barkolounger" hi-back pinto seats in it last December R) ) It is about 70% complete. It rolls but needs trans. linkage, wiring, steering completion,etc.. The 198 probably needs a complete rebuild because it's been sitting and has rust in the valley, no push rods - the intake manifold was just sitting in place unbolted. The body is in decent shape with very minor rust in a coulpe of spots..
The '69 has an un-started 225 in it ( no soot in exhaust manifolds) that has been sitting for 10- 15 years. I would probably pull the pan , and upper ends just to check it out and re-lube before starting. It too needs wiring and final touches to run. The big minus on the '69 is the body -it's beat up. The p/o began fixing it with many pounds of bondo before I got it.
I always figured I would use the '69 for parts. Between the two, I think I can build up a great flattie. :p

Green - check the webshots of mine - the Black '46 is a 2A on a 70 frame. Complete with the T14, D18, 27's and 44 with 4.88's and an OD...

Don't mind the body - it's 'in the shop'...

    green,

I have what I assume is a 3a, even though I think the dash was replaced w/ one out of a M38. It's on a cj-5 frame. I can take any pictures you need for body placement and what not..If it will help the cause..

I've done this it not difficult. Some of the body mounts even lined up IIRC. Used angle in the back for crossmember it made small step bumper in the back. Used stock grille mounts from 2a on 5 chassis I think maybe even was a hole in chassis for one bolt drilled for one. Liked the extra length in front for space it provided for steering conversion and winch mount.

Thanks for the input and links guys. Mounting the body on the 5 frame sounds like it won't be as much of a problem as I thought. I plan to document the build up with pics etc. so I'll keep you posted.
