So the frame is at the blaster.

When it returns, I will spray with shake and shoot self-etch to keep flash rust away while I fix and add elements to the frame.

Then I need to have some paint.

    Was thinking POR-15 vs. Rattle-can in a semi-gloss black.

Anyone use POR-15 on a pretty clean frame?

How did you get in the box-space of the channels?

    Other opinions?

    Thanks.

POR works nice to seal that which you can reach, for the hidey-holes you have to get creative about de-greasing/clean & application.

POR will require two coats & top-coating where exposed to direct light, otherwise it goes from this-

My favorite chassis paint is SPI (Southern Polyurethanes inc) black epoxy primer (6620/6700). The stuff is extremely durable and doesn't need to be topcoated. This is the perfect stuff to spray over your just-blasted chassis.
I'm not a fan of POR15 and the whole "encapsulation" theory, and have had issues with self-etch primers that may have talc in them. Moisture is absorbed by the talc and causes rust to propagate.
A true epoxy is really hard to beat.

After blasting I went with Eastwoods 'After Blast" first. It is a spray on liquid cleaner that has some sort of acid in it but also leaves something on the metal to prevent flash rusting. You spray it on and wipe it off with clean rags. No neutralizing or rinsing needed. Once it is dry you can prime or paint over it.

For inside the channels and boxed areas I used this.
It tends to get all over the place but I feel pretty confident that it covered the inside areas of my frame. I ususally don't buy much Eastwod stuff due to cost but both of these products weren't available locally.

Then I epoxy sealed, and epoxy primered the frame and painted it with a semi-gloss black urethane enamel.

Before going this route I did some research. What I found is most of the magic coatings (kills rust, seals, encapsulates, etc.) that are out there just don't have UV protection and will fade or change color. On most cars the chassis doesn't see daylight. On ours, the front frame rails and other parts do. I wanted everything from the gas tank skid plate to the front bumper to have the same color and sheen as the chassis so I went with the enamel. I can also scuff and paint it as necessary in the future.

The SPI epoxy primer is great stuff. It has an amazing quantity of pigment per volume - try mixing a can that's been on the shelf for a few months.

I see two problems with SPI though - one is that it's not meant as a top coat, and will break down with long exposure to UV (same with POR-15). Second, it cures rock hard after several days, and cannot be top coated without scuffing.

I love Aluthane. Tough. Single stage. Flows into cracks and porous surfaces wonderfully. UV resistant. Works well over poorly prepared surfaces. Its main problem for this purpose is its color - otherwise I would heartily recommend it.

I'll go against the grain here by saying I've had great results with rattle-can automotive primer and Rustoleum professional. I used grey primer though, and the few chips and scrapes I had over the years really showed through the black enamel so if I were to do it over again it would be gloss black over black primer.

REALLY stupid question born out of curiosity. Has anyone powder coated a frame?

When I got Tonk's frame sandblasted they offered to galvanize it for $.75/lb. Very popular with the Rover crowd.

Buddy of mine had his frame powder coated and within a year or two it was flaking and peeling off in large chunks. I am not sure if it was an application problem or if it was a rock crawling frame twisting issue. Either way it didn't last.

I have a problem with powder coating, had a snow plow that came new with powder coating, were it was scratched the rust crept under it and was a problem to clean up for repainting,I had a equipment hauling trailer sandblasted and they primed it with a zinc primer and paint, there explanation was the zinc stopped the rust creep under the paint,I was skeptical, but after years of daily use chaining equipment it was still in good shape....last year I scuffed up the surface and painted it,I thought it held up well...Jim

I think hot-dip facilities are becoming like hen's teeth here in the republik-o-Calif, last one I heard about was in Vacaville, about 90mi from here.

Tim and others regarding the SPI epoxy primer, Barry has added UV inhibitors to this epoxy and he says you don't need topcoat this when used underbody. He also says this product eliminates the need for acid-etch primers. I used this stuff under a mower deck and it took almost two years to wear through the finish. I'm sold!
I have gone the galvanized route on my Rover Defender chassis and bulkhead. It does add a little weight, and the sheetmetal bulkhead got some ripples from the heat. I may consider this for a Jeep chassis.

Best hope you aren't going to be doing any more welding on it if it's galvanized. It would be a royal pain in the arse.

I used rattle can Rustoleum primer and gloss black top coat on my 3B in 1974. Almost all of it is still there. That said, I'm going to try VHT epoxy on my front bumper remodel. Another one with very high solids content and goes on great.

Oh, that's interesting, and could be a development since I have used the product.

Re the etch primer, my understanding is you can use epoxy primer or etch primer as a first coat, your choice. I'm sure this is not limited to the SPI primer, but all epoxy primers, like Kirker, Transtar, House Of Kolor, and all the name brands like PPG etc. The shops like the etch primer because it is fast... and the hot rod guys seem to like the epoxy. I've only used the SPI primer on a little project - a replacement hatchback for my VW - but it went on fine and seems plenty durable.

Buying the SPI stuff (degreaser, primer and clear) was interesting. I called the local distributor and told him what I wanted. He took my card number and the next day the products showed up on my front porch - he dropped them off while making his sales rounds.

That's exactly why I didn't go for it, I knew I had some cracks to fix. That being said on a jeep chassis grinding the zinc back an inch or so from the welding area works fine to prevent fume poisoning & that cold galvanizing spray works a treat to restore corrosion resistance on welded areas.

I have gone with the rusty metal oxide rustoleum primer in the past and on my current frame with rustoleum paint. All the "Pro" stuff whatever that means. Its cheap, it works well, its easy to touch up and its at any store pretty much. I have used it in the past and it has worked just fine. In fact I put my first jeep in rustoleum oxide primer in the winter and it still didn't rust through after 8 months. I think I will be going epoxy primer for the body though.

Pretty expensive to have parts blasted.
With that in mind a high quality paint job just makes good sense.

The best primer I've ever used is the Corlar industrial 2 K primer.
For me the Martin Seymour products ranked 2nd best.

I'm not real happy with my last 2 gallons of Nason Ful Poxy.
Apparently you get what you pay for.
So I'm going back to the more expensive Dupont industrial Corlar.

Last time I used the rustoleum rusty metal primer and tractor paint it rusted in a couple of years, even with the addition of their harder. My 6 frame is going to have to be redone. No matter what I do, it does not seem to stop the rust. I've tired self etching primmer and same thing.
