1967 CJ5 with V6 that's been off the road for at least 15 years. I am going to change the gear oil in the axles, 3 speed manual trans and transfer case. How much do I need? I would guess about 8 quarts. Thanks!

might want to find some GL-4 for the transmission/transfer case. The axles can use GL-5. Seems that the GL-5 creates a sacrificial layer on the brass parts and can cause chunking and premature wear.

This can be a big can of worms, do a bit of research and you will see.

Yes but it tends to be more expensive. In the axles GL-4 or GL-5 is fine. GL-4 only in the transmission and transfer case.

Buy more than you think you need unless you have the rare leak free Jeep. You will probably use some every year.

My local NAPA Auto Parts store carries GL4. Maybe where you live, too? It runs about 38 dollars a gallon. Don't go to the regular parts stores where kids work. You ask them this question and you get a blank stare...

Or the standard "this says it is GL-4 compatible" or "this supercedes GL-4" rhetoric.

Hi All, I put GL5 in my tranny and TC, now what do I do? I haven't driven it more than 2 miles sense I filled them up. Should I just drain it and use GL4 or do I need to flush it with some thinner oil solution? Thanks for this thread, I would have never known!!! FYI, it's a 66 CJ5 V6-225, T-86, Spicer 18.

    Thanks!!
