That is a beautiful set-up. It deserves an HEI distributor though. ;)

thanks a bunch. i'll try the 85's. thanks Walt, and your probably right about the HEI. maybe later when I get it running. the dipstick is the same one that was in it when I bought the motor, correct one, don't know. I painted it red just because I had red paint handy, I guess.

I am using the factory recommended heat range, but I am very specific about my brand.. I use Bosch supers.. They are not expensive as compared to the exotic platinum multi electrode split tip unobtaniums.. I like the copper cores of the supers..

I always run AC Delco Platinum plugs in everything I own. They run about $5.00 per plug but I've never had any issues running them.

On a side note, does anyone else have trouble screwing in their plugs into the Dauntless? Every Craftsman 13/16 deep socket I have is too thick and won't fit inside the outer diameter of the block. Its the stupidest thing I've ever seen.

yeah, I had that issue too. i happen to have a real spark plug socket that is real thin for it. Says on it to not use it for anything else.

I have spark plug socket as well, and it was too wide as well. Never seen anything like it.

I have switched to the E3 plugs on my units. They are all HEI, but don't have to worry about gap and they seem to last real well for me.

    nickmil In mothballs.

Every Bosch plug I've run in any vehicle has caused issues at some point as have Champions except their race quality plugs. The consumer plugs stink. When the Jeep still had the F head put in Champions from a local store and it wouldn't start. Put in the worn out junk plugs and fired right up.
Autolite in the 231 but have to change them regular as they wear out pretty quick. Otherwise typically NGK's work well. There are others that are ok as well.

I am running AC Delco R43s plugs right now, but I also have HEI. I just looked up plugs for a 1976 and 1975 with a 231. This engine has the HEI distributor that I put in my 225 and it specs AC Delco R46SZ. The AC Delco brand was just to compare apples to apples. I guess I will be getting new plugs today.

I just pulled mine to look (I guess I'm not that particular)

I have Autolite 85's...Seem to be just fine with my HEI. I believe everything I read on the net so I could be easily swayed to change.

I just swapped mine over. runs the same so far. .060 gap is the spec.

edit. runs better with smoother power at low rpms.

Chuck, what improvements have you seen with the E3's? Which ones are you running? What with all the hype on them I've seen, I thought I would try a set of E3.52's to replace my RJ12YC's.
