So, I was moving the 58 into the shop bay when the hi-low shifter fell back toward the passenger seat. The transfer case went to neutral. I moved the shifter handle back forward and it went into low range. Now, no matter where I put the shifter it always stays in low range. I figure a set screw is loose and allowed the shaft to slide in the shift fork or possibly it is a roll pin that has sheared ? I am not sure. So now do I need to pull the transfer case out to fix this problem or can it be done in the jeep ? The new V6 the sm-420 and the rebuilt 18 only have about 50 miles on them. Trans and "T" case were rebuilt by Herm. Yes, I will call him in the morning for his recommendations tomorrow.

You're right, it sounds like a set screw came loose. Pull the inspection cover and watch while somebody moves the lever.
It is possible that it could be something with your shifter as well. Again, crawl down there and watch while somebody moves the lever.

I pulled the the cover and looked inside. Like I expected the shaft moves but not the shift fork. I dropped the transfer case and cleaned the gasket surfaces, and got it ready to go back to Herm. I have to got to McMinnville anyway and Herm is not that much farther for me. He said he would pull it apart and fix it while I wait. I have nothing but good things to say about him and his work. I would do it myself but I don't seem to have the time while I am off work.(would take me a while) Should be able to get it back in and on the road again by the 9th. Just in time to leave for work on the 10 .....

    Thanks for the input.
