1955 cj5 seat replacements???

Hi i have a 1955 cj5 that i have being restoring from the ground up and was wondering if anyone knows of good fitting seats that look stock. I'm tall already (6'4") so i just need a seat that inst to tall, if they don't fit the brackets its ok i can fab something. Thank you.

 

I can't think of a seat that will help you. Check out "wheel well notches". It may be your only choice.

 

Well are there seats that are close to stock im not going to be going on road trips with it just cruising around town

 

This is a factory style replacement seat for the early CJ's...............http://www.ebay.com/itm/13400-01-Ru...67120?fits=Make:Jeep|Model:CJ5.......starting about 1964 and through the seventy's........No frills , but may work for you with modified brackets......Tall guys have problems with the seat not going back far enough and the steering wheel getting into your knees........a tilt wheel will help along with a smaller diameter steering wheel if your inclined to go that way..........doing a wheel tub notch as suggested above allows the seat to be moved back several inches which also helps.........sometimes it takes all of the mods for a tall guy to be comfortable.

 

If you really want good seats, I would look around for some seats and brackets from a mid 60s-71 CJ. The Jeep factory buckets are comfortable, and quite a few owners here have had their seats rebuilt at their local upholstery shop. The Jeep factory bucket seats are both comfortable and supportive.

Then if you don't have enough room, I would suggest the wheelhouse notch. There's just not much room with the factory seat positon, and I think the factory config is about the best you will do without modifying the body a little so the seats will scoot back further.

 

Moved to tech for better exposure and this is not a restoration question.

 

I put in the smittybuilt low back seats and like them (57 cj5). Driver side went on the frame that was there with no issues, the passenger side needed a cross brace to match old seat frame. Pretty comfy. I'm not sure how someone over 6' would enjoy it though. Lol

Smittybilt low-back is very close to original in look and feel. A little high under the butt - it helps if you make your custom mounts to lower them an inch or two. Their price is not bad, either.

But at anything over 5'-10" you have to stoop to see under the w/s frame, even with stock seats. I like to run with the w/s folded down anyway!

Search here - there ought to be lots of old threads on seats. Even pictures and plans for mounts.

 

As timgr mentioned, I too prefer the early to mid 60s original seats - the ones with metal coil springs for a foundation. At 6' tall, I sit "in" these seats vs sitting "on" the later seats (and aftermarket ones) that are built on foam cushions. All the aftermarket seats have me sitting way too high and not enough leg room.
