I searched and couldn't find anything for this particular distributor. I installed a hei distributor from crt performance in my 67 with the 225 v6. I have my number one plug pointing towards cylinders 2, 4, and 6 and I know that on my cap, that's the number one plug. Does the cap fire in a clockwise or counter clockwise pattern? in other words, I need to know where to put the rest of my spark plug wires in relation to the number one plug.

    thanks

As a side note, we installed them counter clockwise in the order 1 through 6. It did start up but didn't stay running. It could be because the wires are not in the correct position or its not timed correctly.

Sweet, thanks! Hopefully that was causing it to run weird. Different question but same topic. Its okay if my number one plug faces towards the cylinders on the passenger side if thats where it points when the first cylinder is all the way up, correct?

I'm going to go ahead and assume you're not familiar with the little nuances of the odd fire engine. It can be a little confusing if you've never worked on one before. Firing order and rotor position are important but firing 'sequence' is the most important. Here's a little reading for you. http://forums.off-road.com/jeepster-american-jeepster-club/60875-odd-fire-what.html, http://forums.off-road.com/jeepster-american-jeepster-club/60422-odd-firing-oddfire.html. Most of the information pertains to points distributors but the HEI works on the same firing sequence.

Also - do a search on my name - I have put a lot of posts up on HEI installs and how they need to be oriented. My first was a CRT unit, and now I make my own. I have pics on here as to the proper orientation of the #1 on the cap (and it's VERY important) this is NOT just like any other motor, nor will they behave the same.

Thanks for the help. I looked at the links and how they don't fire in even intervals makes sense, and the cap confirms that since the terminals are unevenly spaced. It will start up, and idle okay, but it misfires or backfires and then stalls when I try to give it gas.

Chuck, I think my distributor is set up like yours. I have the first wire in the correct position and then 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 in a clockwise fashion. My vacuum advance is facing towards the front of the jeep, almost touching the fan.

Is the misfiring or backfiring coming from bad timing?

Right, I didn't mean to put the one on the end. I have it starting with 1, and then 6 all the way to 2 in order

I would think the bad timing could be the problem if you have the orientation correct. Try a couple different positions in each direction. your sure the tdc is set right?

One more question for you guys. The number one plug on the cap is supposed to be to the right of the battery and other wires. But depending on which way you hold it, right can be either way. I read somewhere that the first plug has the longest contact point inside the cap. Is this true? The plug on one side of the cap has a long contact and the one on the other side is short.

Number one is the shortest post. The link I posted shows it clearly labeled so you know which one it is, top or bottom. Timing must be exact and everything runs from the first spark.

Okay, I guess I read it wrong somewhere else and I figured that underneath the cap might be different between yours and mine. Thanks for the help, hopefully I can get it working right tomorrow.
