Ok guys...trying to seperate my transfer case from the gear box. Took off the access cover to the drive gear. The service manual said the drive gear has a nut and a cotter pin holding the gear on the shaft. The nut has some kinda softer metal ring installed over the nut that looks like it's been pinged to keep the nut from backing off the shaft. This nut is sitting inside the housing about 3 inches. Kinda hard to deal with. Anyone have any ideas on how to remove this retainer ring?

first off . what are you working on . as to the locking washer . normally I would just use a flat blade screwdriver and hammer to knock down the edge that's folded up . then a socket will fit . and I ask again what are you working on , there might be more to it , just to remove transfer case . some transmissions will fall apart if your not careful

Ok I'm working on a 1970 CJ5, with a V6 225 3 speed. here's the gear I'm trying to remove. This gear is on the output shaft of the gearbox. You're looking through a cover I removed on the transfer case. My manual says to remove the cotter pin and then remove the gear. Obviously no cotter pin, only this ring on top of a nut that looks difficult to remove. By the way, the repair Im trying to accomplish is to change the clutch but I had alotta difficulty handling the bell housing, gear box and transfer case all in one piece. I posted a question on here and someone suggested taking off the transfer case first, then the gearbox, then the bell housing to make things easier to handle, so that's were I am in the progress of this repair. All suggestions very welcome, cuz I'm a nubee at this mechanic stuff. First time jeep owner as well. Thanks in advance.

That's a Nyloc or nylon insert locknut. It will just unscrew. The nylon insert is just there to provide friction against the threads to keep the nut from loosening. The nut can be reused, but it's usually not advised since the threads cut their way through the nylon insert when the nut is tightened, so it won't hold as tight the second time around. They can be found at hardware stores or industrial supply houses really cheap.

Those nuts are torqued over 100 lbs. ft. So will be tight. A 1/2" impact or putting the transfer case in gear and holding the output shaft yoke works well if you don't have an impact wrench. If the shifter top is off the transmission then locking it in two gears works well also.

Ok I have a 1/2 in. Impact, just gonna have to find some big sockets. The shifter is off the top of the gear box....but what do u mean about "locking it in two gears?" Sorry I'm just learning.

    In a 3 speed, you'll see 2 sliding shift collars, one for 1st & reverse, & one for 2nd & 3rd.
Normally, only one is engaged at any certain time and the other is in neutral. If you engage two gears simultaneously, the trans cannot turn.
Be sure to put both back in the neutral position before putting the top cover back on.

When you lock the tranny into two gears (as stated above) I recommend that you hold the rear slider gear in the forward position with wire and tie the wire to a bolt at the front of the tranny. This keeps the main shaft from coming apart and dropping the needle bearings. Leave this wire on until you have everything back together.

if that is a '70 cj can't he just pull the transfer case off without pulling the drive gear off? it should be a large hole case which is what i have on my '71 and i don't remember needing to remove the gear.

If he has the V-6 with T-86 or T-14 transmission the. Yes. If he has the T-90 then it will be a small hole case unless converted.
