I have a completely original 66 cj5 with generator. I left a sprayer switched on for 2 weeks and killed the battery. I recharged the battery and started it but now the generator light will not go out and seems to go brighter as the engine speed is increased.

Seems like I recall needing to arc the generator or something to get it polarized??? Any suggestions?

The voltage regulator/generator can be polarized to synchronize them when necessary. This normally means momentarily flashing a jumper wire across the Field and Battery terminals at the regulator, as I recall, but check to be sure for your vehicle.

But I'm surprised that a dead battery would cause that problem, unless the voltage was reversed when working with it. I'm thinking more likely one contact inside the regulator is arced/burnt and stuck shut. Tried whacking it? Or more seriously, pull the cover and check.

If you have a delco generator, you jumper (flash) bat to arm. If you have the prestolite then it is as above.

Thanks Walt, I couldn't recall. The voltage regs I used had it printed right on the cover.

Tried to post a pic of the generator but apparently I do not have that option (permission)
