I need to replace the starter on my '67 CJ5 134 cu. in.... I "thought" I remembered reading somewhere that it was the same starter as the one used for an early small block Chevy... anyone know anything about it?

I just got an original one off ebay for $25. No big deal to get an actual Jeep part.

If not, search Toyota starter here on the forum.

    Lots of talk about it.

    Welcome to the forum.

Are you sure it needs replacing? Brushes and bearings are cheap and easy.

Don't think the Chevy one will fit. Otherwise it would have shown up when people say to use the '67 Toyota Landcruiser starter.

Don't recall hearing tell of SBC starter compatibility, and just from having seen both (although not at the same time) I think the Willys starter has a longer snout than the Chevy. There is a Toyota application that'll fit (can't tell you what is it, though), but PeteL's suggestion could be worth looking in to.

I had to widen the holes for the Toyota starter, but it was easy. Works far better than the original did, and it was only about $55.

I moved this to proper forum via my smart phone and it separated Timgr's post from the op post. Finally got it fixed. Sorry for the delay. Nickmil
