No oil filter?

Hey guys. So I've been slowly working on my 58 CJ5. Was going to change all the fluids and junk which got me thinking. After all the crawling around I've done on this engine (F134), I don't recall seeing an oil filter anywhere. I head out to the garage and sure enough, no oil filter to be found. What's up with that? Was it an option. Did a PO remove it? If so, how would one go about replacing it. Sorry if this is an ignorant question. This is my first (of hopefully many) old Jeep project. Learning as I go.

The F-head has a canister oil filter not a modern spin on filter, look upper left behind fan as you face front of engine.

 

that is actually on upper right, not left. aka passenger side. If you're unfamiliar with changing this style filter its very simple, you simply unscrew the bolt in the top of this canister, pull the lid off and there should be a large filter inside which usually has a wire handle to easily lift the filter out of the housing. and when you put it all back together make sure you still have a good condition gasket for the lid of the housing or you will soon have no oil. Trust me on this, been there done that.

 

Are you sure that's not the left as you face the front of the motor?

 

As your facing the motor yes that would be on the left. But whenever your talking placement on vehicle its always left or right from seated facing forward in the seat. if you order a new fender for your jeep and you ask for the left fender, they are going to send you a drivers side fender and if you ask for a right fender they will send you a passenger fender every time.

 

Ooops my bad, I just re-read your post and I must have overlooked where you had told him it was "as your facing the motor," I apologize, I guess I had a blonde moment

Yeah, I saw that picture earlier when I was searching. That's a beautiful engine. Unfortunately I do not have one of those canisters for the filter. Took a picture with my phone this morning but haven't had time to upload it yet. My engine runs good and I have good oil pressure. I've seen where some people run without a filter and change oil frequently. Does anyone see a problem with that?

 

That's what I was thinking. I can't see where it was bypassed or anything

 

The engine number is 4J1225511
The Vin is 57548 38082
I've questioned the year of this thing. The plate says it's a 1958 but the serial number doesn't jive with the charts I've seen.
Is there a chart for the engine numbers as well?

 

Okay. Just figured it out. Someone HAS removed the filter. They just cut the lines and crimped them shut. I would assume that this is bad. I'll be hunting for a canister set up, or maybe I'll just put in an aftermarket remote filter. Thanks for all the feedback!
