header / manifold options for 225 V6

    Finally getting around to swapping-in the Buick 225 V6 and the SM465. Have done a lot of searching and reading, but wasn't able to find anything definitive. What are the best manifolds or headers to use with this engine? Know that steering components can cause fitment problems - going to be installing some kind of crossover steering, probably a saginaw box with a forward swinging pitman arm.

    Options - Buick stock, Novak Block Huggers, AA outside the rail (couple other makers as well), AA inside the rail.

    There have been recent threads on each. Which is best, depends on what you want, your skills in the steering and exhaust fitment.

    Thanks Warloch. Read about the design work you did with Novak to develop those headers. Looks like you did a real nice job. Wasn't able to find much info about the different manifold options though, except I read vague references to things like 'flat' driver's-side manifolds and rear-dump vs. front-dump manifolds, etc. Would love to hear a little bit more about the differences between all these different manifolds, and would appreciate some info about what vehicles to find them on. Pictures would also be awesome. Thanks.

    You can see both the AA outside the rail and the Novak at warloch.com in various pictures. Right now, I am running the AA's on the Red '51 and the Blue '49. I put the Novak on the neighbors CJ5, they are to go on my nieces CJ5 and then I am going to look at fitting them on the '51 and see if I can move the exhaust inside the rails.

    There wasn't a real option for inside the rail other than stock manifolds before the Novak ones, which is why I have the AA's on my earlier rig setups and why I worked with Eric to get them fit right.

    Have some kind of outside-the-framerails headers that came with the engine, but don't want to use them. AA makes inside-the-framerails headers? Don't see anything about those on their website. Wasn't able to find any pictures of anything but the Novak headers on your website either. My main concern about those Novak headers is how/where they dump on the passenger's-side and interference between the exhaust and the driveshaft / axle at full compression.

    im assuming there is nothing available that directly replaces the manifolds . Front dump with ross box and inside rails ?

    There was a thread a couple of weeks ago with those installed in a rolling chassis. I think it's in the early forum. Look a few pages in. As far as the Novaks go, there's no issue with interference on the passenger side until you cross over or continue back along side the rear driveshaft. I chose to go over the TC flange which has proved to be a good choice. No interference, doesn't touch the tub, and is out of the way of off road debris. If you go along the driveshaft you'll need a real skinny muffler. I used a dual 2 1/4" in/single 3" out Flowmaster 50 series on the passenger side. I used mandrel pipe and pie cut some bends to make my turns. Above thread has some pics.

    Add- I ended up cutting just above the flange after those pics. I also cut at the muffler and added another pie cut above the TC to raise the pipe some. It was just enough and I'm very happy with the results.
