Does anyone have a picture or diagram of the internals of a Dana 20 shifter box? This is the type that is extended from the front of the transfer case and has the shift rails and shifter arms all meeting in one box. Sorry don't have any pictures.

I have a blow-up diagram in my jeepster manual. I'll have to scan it in though. I'll try to get it to you this week. No scanner at home :(

I have scanned and entered some here:
    http://community.webshots.com/user/jpflat2a
album titled: transfer case shift linkage
    ( Single stick D18
( CJ D20 single stick, 1972 and later
( Jeepster single stick D20 box type
these are from the Jeep parts manual
box type also used on full size Jeep pickups and Wagoneers
be aware that there are differences in shift shaft lengths and shift levers due to engine/transmission combos
pics are for general reference only

My Dana 20 shifter doesn't look like either of those two. I was told by the PO that mine was from a Commando. But someone else that looked at it said it was from a scout. Any difference in the two?

Yup, that's a Scout 2 model 20. Pretty much everything else interchanges with a Jeep model 20 so parts are VERY easy to come by. The Scout linkage is probably the best most trouble free one out there. They are simple and except for the pivot pin don't really wear out. The pivot will last almost forever if kept greased. A lot of people switch to that linkage in Jeeps to get away from the sloppy trouble prone shifters of the Jeep 20's. The Commando shifters that I have seen are similar to the J truck and Wagoneer shifters with the control box that gets loose and sloppy and worn out. Nickmil

So is it true that Scout Dana 20's shift backwards from Jeep Dana 20's with 4 Low all the way forward and 4 High all the way back?

Also it should be easier to twin stick the scout over the Jeep 20 shouldn't it.

Yup. The only real difference with the Stock Scout twin stick is the shifters and the shift rails. Jeep 18 sticks will fit right in the 20 single stick housing......... Just have to modify the shift rails. There is a writeup, or used to be on the Binderbulletin web site on how to do this. Nickmil.

The reason that I ask is that when I shift into 4-Low I shift forward but there are a couple of guys I wheel with that think that I am doing it wrong. They are adament that with a Dana 20 4-Low is back not forward. But I can tell the difference when I am driving that 4-Low is forward. Thanks for the help.

The stock CJ 20 linkage has a bellcrank in the linkage that reverses the direction the stick travels for the various positions. That's why the Scout is reversed from the CJ. Nickmil.

I kind of like them thinking I don't know what I am doing. That way they expect less from me and when I do something even remotely cool they think it is extra special.
