I am hoping to swap to some type of granny low transmission in my CJ2A with 225 V6, for the least amount of $ possible. I found this bellhousing in my boneyard, and hoping that I can bolt a SM420 to it.

According to info I found this is a "GM" pattern. 8.25 across top holes, 9.12 across bottom, and approx 4-5/8 center hole.

Will a SM420 bolt to this?

Yes. You will need an adapter to the transfer case.

    Thanks for quick reply!!

Is there any particular input shaft length to look for? . . or are they all the same?

Also, just curious --> was this combo ever OEM with Jeep? (Buick V6 to GM), or is this some kind of Buick car thing, or aftermarket adapting bellhousing?

    Thanks!!

That's a stock bellhousing. All the Jeep V-6 Jeeps had that bolt pattern except '71 which had a cast in adapter to the T-14. All the others had a bolt on adapter to the trans. No, SM-420 was never factory in Jeep. The GM 420's pretty much all had the correct input shaft length.

So this bellhousing could have come from a Buick car with manual tranny, or could be from a Jeep, (minus the bolt-on adapter)?

I did not think V6 Jeeps came with SM420 or other GM tranny , that is why I thought it was odd that a bellhousing had that bolt pattern. I did not know Jeep used adapters.

    Learned something new. Thanks.

If the 225 bellhousing you already have is for a manual tranny you should be able to use it for the swap, unless it is the later one with the cast in adapter. If I remember correctly, the mounting holes for the SM420 are threaded and you have to drill out the holes in the bellhousing so you can run the bolts through from the inside. That is, you have to bolt the bell to the tranny before you mount them on the engine.

The cast in bell housing , on the 1971s........will only the T14 bolt to it?

What trannys will bolt strait to it? from manual to automatic?

    do you know?

Reason i ask is my T14 leaks from every bolt hole , and are all stripped out , and the main front bearing is going bad, so either going to rebuild it or swap it

    Like the jeep t18/dana 20, or 400 turbo/dana 20 will they bolt up ?? to the back of 1971 225 v6?

add what about the t98/dana 20

    Ron,
I just got hold of 3 sm420's of various conditions. I need to make a good one for the DJ but between the 3 we should be able to get 2 good ones out of them.
If your willing to do the work, I'll give you all 3 and you make 2 good ones and keep one for yourself.
