Been fiddling with my 68 cj and it will run and idle great. Pretty sure the accelerator pump is still not working properly even after a rebuild, anyway the issue I am having is if I shut the motor off and the go to restart (doesn't matter if warm or cold) intermittently it won't turn over. I discovered if I leave it in gear and push the jeep and get the motor to turn it will start. Has anyone solved this issue?

Check grounds between starter, engine block, chassis, etc. if all clean, rust free, and test ok, check ignition switch.

have you tried to put a test light on . starter solenoid wire when this happens .old school trick is to wire in a ford starter solenoid . in between ignition switch and delco starter solenoid . could be a voltage drop

When this happens, after turning the key to start, can you hear the starter solenoid clicking?

Can hear the starter click and the ammeter drops like a rock. I am thinking along the lines of something distributed related, the starter shouldn't be engaged when the key is out, but the points and the condenser and the cap are new, didn't know if the resistor on the firewall could be the culprit but it seems to be ok.

I would drop the starter and bench test it. Be advised that the drive end housing on the 225 V6 engines are hard to come by but the rest of the starter is typical GM.

The solenoid for the GM starters were notorious for failing due to a lack of enough current from the key switch to the solenoid "S" terminal. This was generally due to too small of a wire used. I usually just add another wire from the ign switch to the solenoid with the existing.
