I have just completed an engine / transmission swap in my 64 cj5 from a 1971 donor vehicle.

I did run the engine for a few minutes before starting the project, now I wish I had run it longer since it is pushing oil into the exhaust from the passenger side best I can tell. I seriously doubt that this is just a valve seal issue and I have checked teh breather and the PVC is new. The smoke once she is good and hot is to the point you can hide a house with it

The engine has sat for the better part of 10 years. I added marvels mystery oil because so many folks insist it is worth it that short of turning lead into gold it would solve every other issue with life - personally I have always leaned toward the side that stuff is snake oil - but that is not why I am posting. FWIIW - Marvels has not yet helped this situation - it has only been in for 24 hours.

I have been told that replacing the valve seals will solve my problem - but they are not available as the listed application - 1971 Jeep cj5 w V6 - sooo

question one - would 1971 Buick V8 engine seals work as the V6 design was a modified V8?

I seriously doubt that oil in the exhaust pipe to the point it is dripping from the pipe seams is a tad more oil that would get past seals and that the engine is in need of a complete overhaul or replacement.

My first and quickest choice would be to find a suitable running engine that would bolt up to the Dauntless bell housing, but in my searching, most of the links are broken when I search for "Dauntless V6 engine replacements" or I am just not finding the correct wording for my search. Soo question 2 - what year engine should I look for if I were to bolt it up to the Dauntless bell housing?

last question - If I overhaul the engine - not being able to locate valve seals concerns me - are there engine overhaul kits available? - I ask since I am not having much luck here either finding anything.

Thank you in advance for your guidance and assistance.

Engine overhaul kits are available as are valve stem seals.
That much oil is more than valve stem seals. Sounds like stuck rings in the pistons. MMO can work to help loosen rings up as can Seafoam and other products. You need to let them soak for a fair amount of time. A couple days would be better than 24 hours. There is no guarantee however.
Might try a compression test and see if there is a cylinder or cylinders lower than the others. If so concentrate your efforts there.

Listen to nickmil. Compression test - find out if it is a crisis in one cylinder, or a general malaise.

225's and other buick v6's are plentiful and so are most of the parts. Look on Rockauto.com for a good reference of availabity. Jeep used the 225 from 66 thru 71. Buick used them from the 50's up to 64/65. After jeep was through with the tooling AMC sold it back to them and buick built them again in the 70s. There are a lot of threads and articles on here describing compatibilty and rebuilds, just be patient and learn to use the search.

    Also look at:

If you get a broken link doing a search make sure it's got the .net and not .com.
I've found not all of the info is switched over to the newer .net page.

atf in the cyl helps to free things up too if its just rings.

    ATF fluid.... why not?,,,,

been a member her since the 64 had a tree growing through it. when I cut the tree down and draged it onto a trailer with a buldozer, I got folks attention. I had as much fun resurrecting the pile a rust as everyone else.

Been driving it - beating on it - fixing it - upgrading it - loving it like a child

Searching this forum is what kept my sanity. We do realize between the spammer attacks and "just because" there have been 4 or more server changes to each a prayer goes out each time and the gods have always answered - thank you sparky - you have a job you do "just for the love" so My hat is off to you!

I have searched and searched again - honest as the day is long. "Dauntless replacement engine", "Dauntless V6", the list goes on - but typing it here ..those of the ol timers who remember me know - I HAVE SEARCHED - nothing pops - I only wish it have because I would have m answers

I do not like wasting folks time - - cause folks - I DESPERATELY need yer help (think - this dude has a wife who is not happy he is still working on this project)

so lets just stay on topic and see what we can come up with........... valve seals - source of engines, rebuild kits - I have run out of options - the 4cyl going back in is actually moving up on the list as - OK lets do it

seriously - folks here know me - I have just been MIA for too long

happiest post of my entire life - OF ALL TIME ---- before the post and ever since - remember it like it was yesterday - you just do not forget teh feeling of total strangers helping you through an issue after all that work.

I actually have a tear in my eye remembering the "community" that helped me back then - so to those helping now - THANK YOU

started her again today - she smoked n choked - did not have the time to give her a compression test as my son had a soccer game and family comes first

Gdnight yall - and thanks again

+1. No diagnosis possible without data. Don't jump to conclusions and decide you need a rebuild.
