Newbie here. I would appreciate assistance in locating a source for a new or original tail light/license plate bracket assembly for a 1971 CJ5 that belongs to a computer-less friend of mine. Thank you!

    Welcome from Oklahoma

Try these sources- look at #25 in this thread for a very good list of sources. If no luck in any of these, you can put a want to buy ad up on this site.

When my license plate bracket broke, I just bolted mine directly to the slots in the frame cross member under the left taillight

That one looks in relatively good shape to me. I'd offer to buy it, but we aren't allowed to do that in the regular forum.

NLA (no longer available). The only source for these lights is from another Jeep - wreck, part-out, whatever. The lenses are available. Buckets in good condition are scarce, because they get smashed pretty often. What you have is better than you realize.

I agree, what is there is very fixable. No longer available as Timgr said. My daughters was worse than that and with some patience was able to make it look virtually new.

Crown sells them. Any Jeep retailer should be able to get them. Jeep PN 8122928. There is a Grote or Petersen number too, but I don't have it on hand.

Took me awhile to find this again, but there is a source on ebay that has a tail light assembly that looks very very similar to the original. They've been selling these for a few years. I last posted it on this forum in Jan 2011 here.

And the ebay link for the lights.

I bought a 74 CJ5 being restored in a divorce situation (the CJ could have been the cause). I have no before pictures and have found little in the way of pictures to guide me on such as lens colors and locations. I am trying to restore it to original, I have rusted out tail lights, the Peterson lens 424-15 is no longer available, Is this close?http://www.ebay.com/itm/JEEP-CJ5-CJ...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27c8367d71

Was there a tag bracket under the port light and a clear lens under the light to illuminate like the 71 pictured above? The two "cans" that I have do not have that clear portion. one is a "GROTE 416" and the other, a bit deeper is a "PM-423" with a "PETERSON 424-15" red lens. Where can I find a clear shot of the back of a 74 with correct lighting? Thanks

    Welcome from Boston.

If you read this thread from the top, the information contained there answers your questions. The pictures above show you what you should have.

Your eBay link is not exactly like the originals. Similar, but not the same. Yes, the left light has a license plate bracket and a window to illuminate the plate - just like pictured above. There is a clear plastic lens that goes inside the can.

If you have the cans, the lenses can be purchased from Jeep retailers - search for Jeep PN 8122928.

I believe your only source for complete correct lights is a wreck or parts Jeep. Unfortunately, these lights were mounted in a vulnerable spot and were often smashed. Examples in good condition are scarce.

Anything else is a make-do substitute. Lots of these jeeps have replacement lights that are actually boat trailer lights or something similar.

Also look here - the "last round tail light." http://cj3b.info/Dating/Taillights.html

Thank you, I appreciate your response. My concern was in that I am dealing with a 74 and the above is for a 71. Yes, most of what I have found and touted as a Jeep part are actually rather cheap trailer lights West Marine/Track Auto stuff. I think I will hold on to the two I have that do not match and neither has the clear plastic to illuminate the tag and go for the Ebay offering.
